In 1851, Lake Station became a county seat and was named for the nearby Lake Michigan. The first post office was established in 1827, and the name was changed to "Lake Station" in 1892. In 1913, a dam was built across the Little Miami River to provide power for local mills. A year later, Lake Station became an incorporated town. In 1920, residents voted to annex neighboring towns of New Albany and Peebles because they felt that their community had too much competition from those two towns. Today, Lake Station is one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Indiana due to its charming downtown area with historical buildings dating back to 1814 and its beautiful river views from many different areas of the town. Additionally, there are plenty of shops and restaurants available within walking distance of most residents' homes which makes it easy to get around without having too much trouble finding anything you need or want.
