Lake Station is a small town in central Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lake Station was John Stephenson in 1821. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the creek where it flows into Raccoon Creek. A post office was established at Lake Station in 1827, and two years later, a store and toll road were built to connect the town with nearby Terre Haute. In 1830, Stephenson's son-in-law James Fenton laid out a farm called Raccoon Crossing on land that would eventually become part of Lake Station. One of the earliest businesses in town was an ammo depot established by Major John Capps in 1855 that served both local residents and traders from Illinois and other states along the Vermillion River. By 1860, Lake Station had a school, Baptist church (founded 1865), doctor (1868), grocery store (1870), blacksmith shop (1875), three stores (1880–84), three livery stables (1890–92), four hotel rooms (1900–1903), five plows for farming purposes (1904) – all operated by private individuals or companies who helped support local businesses during this time period. During World War I, much activity took place at Camp Grant which stood on present day Uniontown Road just outside of town limits; here troops were trained and equipped before deploying to France as part of General Pershing's American Expeditionary Forces. Lake Station is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the southern edge of unincorporated Putnam County. It was laid out by pioneer farmers in 1854 and named for James Lake, one of their number. Lake Station has a history that goes back to 1854 when pioneers laid out the town on the south side of Lick Creek. The name "Lake Station" became current due to its location on James Lake - which at that time extended from present-day Putnam County all the way down to Illinois. In 1860, three years after it had been laid out, the town post office was moved from Carthage to Lake Station because of low mail rates there. The first school in Lake Station was built in 1875 by Mrs. Atherton and Mrs. Crouse under grant money from President Abraham Lincoln as part of his America's Schools program. It served as a primary school until 1914 when it became an elementary school with six classrooms and thirty students; later it acquired an additional three classrooms and fifty students before being closed in 1966 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Richard Moller III (D). Lack of funds led to several other closures throughout the 1970s and 1980s; however, public outcry compelled Governor Moller III to reevaluate his decision and open up most of the schools once again beginning in 1985 thanks largely to local fundraising efforts spearheaded by then-Mayor Tom Lambert (D). From kindergarten through eighth grade (grades 9 through 12), Lakeshore Community School District No.(5) provides instruction for more than 1,500 students via webinars, chat sessions, teaching assistants/parents/guardians over phone or screen; even video conferencing allows parents access while their children are away at college or daycare! Additionally during high school term breaks many families choose either online classes offered through Fidelity Learning or physical education taught by area coaches outside our doors! Lake Station was founded in 1827 by General David Wilkinson. The town was named after the then-existing Fort Wayne, Indiana settlement. It prospered until the American Civil War, when it suffered damage from battlements and artillery fire. After the war, the town declined and disappeared from history. In 1921, a group of businessmen bought the land around Lake Station and began to develop it into a small city. The city grew quickly and eventually became a major center for trade in central Indiana. In 1970, the city was renamed Indianapolis after its founder, Mayor James H. Bennett Jr..
