The rifle was designed by George Stephenson, who established the town as a shipping and trading center on the banks of the Ohio River. In 1845, Stephenson founded what is now known as Colt's Manufacturing Company in Lake Station. At this time, pistols were also being manufactured at Colt's. One of the most famous firearm manufacturers of all time, Colts produced weapons such as the .44-caliber revolver and rifles such as the Model 1886 American Rifle. While manufacturing firearms in Lake Station continued until 1893, it would be several decades before another company would establish itself there with such success. That company was Smith & Wesson Corporation. Smith & Wesson began its operations in 1911 by producing revolvers and shotguns under contract to various law enforcement agencies throughout America. From this day forward, Smith & Wesson has been responsible for a wide variety of firearms products that have helped make America one of the leading global nations in terms of industry.

Lake Station is a small town in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,690 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westfield, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lake Station was French explorer Pierre Charles La Salle in 1669. He named it "Lac du Lac" after his patron saint, Lorette. In 1814, Ulysses S. Grant sent a survey party to explore the area and name it for General George Armstrong Custer after General Custer's military victory at Telegraph Hill near Fort Dearborn on July 26, 1814. Lake Station was founded in 1824 by a group of settlers led by Captain James Doolittle and David Dixon Smith. Doolittle had been captain of USS "Discovery" during the Mexican-American War and he had explored much of what is now Tippecanoe County while commandeering American vessels to transport goods between Mexico City and New Orleans. On September 8, 1824, he erected a log cabin on the banks of the White River opposite present-day downtown Lake Station. Lake Station is a small community located in the town of Lake Station, Indiana. It was founded by Methodists in 1858 and has been a Christian center for many years. The community is also home to the historic Gentry House, built in 1868. The first settlers to the area were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1857. They built a small cabin on what is now East Main Street. In 1860, they made the move to what is now West Main Street and began to build their own house. The Methodists who founded Lake Station originally named it after Mount Pleasant, South Carolina which they had just left behind. In 1865, they moved again, this time to what is now North Main Street where they continued to build their house and live until 1886 when they sold it and all their land to George Pemberton Jr., the founder of Indianapolis. George Pemberton Jr.'s family owned much of downtown Indianapolis until 1907 when they sold everything including the Gentry House which still stands today at 411 N Michigan St.. From 1907-1920, Lake Station was known as "Fenton". This name change was due to an incident that occurred during World War I when Fenton High School (now Fenton Community Schools) was built on part of Pemberton's land dispute with nearby Georgetown High School (now Georgetown Public Schools). After the war, both schools had new names but Gentry House still stands today as one of the city's few remaining examples from those days. From 1920-1927, Lake Station was known as "Stratford". During this time period, Stratford resembled neighboring Gary more than modern day Lake Station did because there wasn't any commercial development around it other than grocery stores and convenience stores that catering mainly towards Indians/Hindus living in rural areas near by such as White Sands and Bourbonnais Lakesands communities. Finally from 1927-1935, Lake Station reverted back to its original name once again - "Lake station" - while continuing its role as a local Christian center with weekly services held at various churches throughout the village until it closed its doors permanently in 1935 due largely to lack of support from central government funding programs that were available at that time for religious institutions outside urban areas like Fort Wayne or Chicago however Daughters Aid Society continues operations currently running out of facilities located about 2 miles south east of town off Route 621 sandwiched between Good Shepherd Lutheran Church & First Baptist Church until recently operated along side former post office building currently used by Technical College being renovated into apartments/condominiums; finally since 1975 satellite TV service has been provided through Town Hallofficial website
Lake Station was founded by the Indiana General Assembly in 1824. The town was named for General David Dixon, who donated land to the state for a military post. The area now known as Lake Station was developed around the post office and military base. In 1841, the first county courthouse was built in the town.
