Lake Station is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 740 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1837 by Colonel Elijah White and his wife Ann (née Bowman). The first post office was established in 1838. In 1846, the name became Lake Station when a railroad station was built there. The village grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location on the Ohio River just north of Terre Haute. By 1890, it had a population of 1,200 people and became an agricultural center with many plantations working in corn and cotton production. During World War II, Lake Station was one of sixteen towns that were used as airfields within General Eisenhower's Strategic Air Command for bombing operations against Nazi Germany. Between 1945 and 1947, the population decreased from 1,500 to 500 as most residents left for military service or other opportunities in Illinois or Wisconsin. However, by 1951 the population had increased to 675 again due to new housing developments developed around the nearby community of Plainfield and elsewhere in central Indiana while others moved into nearby towns such as Warsaw and Decatur because they saw potential economic opportunities there. In 1960s through 1990s, Lake Station enjoyed rapid growth due to its proximity to Interstate 65 which led to more businesses opening up along with job growth for local farmers who exported their products throughout North America. In 1998-1999 a fire destroyed much of downtown including most of the commercial buildings before quickly being extinguished by firefighters using sustained heat from burning tires on walkways above until all but two blocks were rebuilt using funding provided by then-Mayor Donny Hathaway who also served as president of First American Bank located adjacent to downtown which reopened after dramatic fundraising efforts led by Mayor Hathaway’s daughter Kelley Hathaway Bonner who currently leads that organization Today Lake Station continues its brisk economic growth with numerous stores newly opened up along I-65 providing additional jobs for localsfolk as well as tourists spending time at various attractions located near downtown such as Island Park Preserve Zoo & Aquarium followed closely by several golf courses dotting this rural community situated on Island Creek about 15 miles east sideof Indianapolis just off US 41 between Terre Haute & Plainfield

Lake Station is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The townsite was laid out by John Smeaton in 1836. A post office called Lake Station was established in 1842, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1915. The name is derived from a Creek word meaning "a place where there are several cabins." The first store opened on the site in 1847. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1860, and a frame schoolhouse was built in 1868. A railroads passed through the community soon after it was founded, providing transportation for goods and passengers to nearby Indianapolis and other cities. The first school building erected in Lake Station was a log cabin which served as schools for children between 1870-1875;). In 1881, an addition to the original schoolhouse became known as the Ladies' House (later Mrs. Capps' House). The first post office at Lake Station opened on October 15, 1882; it continued service until 1915 when it changed hands multiple times before being discontinued permanently. A new post office called Westfield opened on November 12th 1912; it continue service until 1963 when it closed due to increased competition from other towns within Hancock County with similar names. One of the earliest businesses located in Westfield was a grocery store operated by Hays & Wohl that sold groceries direct to customers rather than through local stores1 In 1916-17 an ice cream parlor called "Pineapple" operated successfully here2 With increasing development around town over time (euphemism: "Hancock's Progress"), many of the original wooden buildings have been replaced or remodeled with more recent construction1 Many residents kept their homes even into later decades2 As late as 1978 some residents still maintained their home gardens3 Today much of what once characterized Lake Station has been replaced by modern structures or housing developments4 Despite its current decline – having lost most of its manufacturing jobs during both 2008-2009 global recession and 2009-2010 real estate bust – there are still people living there who maintain property ownership4 And though business has declined overall since early 2000s5 – largely due to declines among outdoor recreational activities around town7 – some farmers remain active horticulturists9 Some tourism businesses have also sprung up8 However many residents now commute to larger markets outside of Fort Wayne10 New construction is taking place primarily along Harrison Road near US 231 11 While retail business may have declined overall since 2000s12 – chiefly because competition from larger communities has increased13 – agricultural production remains significant14 For those reasons much attention has recently focused on reviving downtown core business16 There are plans underway6 To demolish all but two buildings currently standing within town limits which would free up land for more contemporary development7
Lake Station is a town in Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. The first post office at Lake Station was established in 1872. The town was named for the artificial lake that filled its valley and served as a reservoir for Posey County. A sawmill and gristmill were built there in the 1870s, but they failed to operate because of low water levels. In 1887, an electric light company founded by James Haughton purchased land around the reservoir to build a line from Bloomington to Terre Haute. The company began service on July 4, 1888. By 1900, only a small community of about 30 people remained around the power plant and reservoir. In 1912, construction began on the first phase of what would become the I-465 Expressway which ran parallel to existing Route 123 between Terre Haute and Bloomington. At that time it was called "Old Main Road". The highway became known as I-465 in 1967 when it was extended east from downtown Indianapolis along Old Main Road to its current terminus near Lake Station
