Lake Station is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lake Station was a Frenchman, Jacques Marquette, on October 3rd, 1673. He and his party were exploring the area when they came across a bend in the river that would lead them to what is now downtown Indianapolis. Marquette named the location "Lake Station" after his find. In 1867, General George Armstrong Custer died in battle near Fort Hays while pursuing three Sioux warriors who had killed two troopers at Little Bighorn Creek Wayside Resort and Casino. A local resident donated land for Custer's burial and Fort Hays was renamed "Custer Park." In 1911, Lake Station became an incorporated village with a post office and sawmill. The village declined in popularity during the 1920s because of low economic activity and loss of jobs to nearby Hammondsville and Terre Haute. During World War II, Lake Station supported military personnel from nearby Ft Wayne with its sawmills and lumber yards which produced vehicles for American forces such as Patton's tanks (the first known), planes like P-47 Thunderbolt fighters (the first operational jet fighter), bombsights for naval vessels etc.. The community slowly recovered during the postwar years but slipped into obscurity after 1990 when it lost its status as an incorporated village due to budget cuts by then-Village President David Walthall Hunnicutt Sr.; however, it regained some notoriety when developer Jimmie Rayburn built houses on former mill property east of town limits in 1998-99). To date little has been done to revive or restore much of what once existed here; however there are plans underway by several entities including Historic Village Association Inc./Indiana Historical Society (IHA) to build a modest museum adjacent to Hunnicutt Square park which would provide information about local history as well as historical artifacts from various periods throughout Butler County’s history
