Fenton developed a trading post and mill on the river, which became known as "Fenton's Landing." In 1827, Caldwell sold his holdings to Wabash Valley Railroad founder George Stephenson. The town grew rapidly after Stephenson built a depot and store on Main Street in 1829-30. By 1830, Lake Station boasted a school, Presbyterian church, post office, jail, and two stores. A sawmill and gristmill were also built that year around the same time as another road connecting it to nearby Pekin (now Peoria). In 1840, Crystal City was founded about north of Lake Station by Daniel D’Amore and John Grimes as an agricultural community for farmers needed water power to operate their machinery during summer months when the Wabash River wasn't high enough to reach them from their farmsades or canals. This early settlement continued until 1906 when it merged with Crystal City into what is today called Crystal City-Lake Station Township (LCST), one of eleven townships within Lake County proper. During prohibition times (1937-1948), local residents voted not to join Howard County because they wanted prohibition enforcement within their own township instead of being taxed by that countywide force; this decision remains controversial among today's residents living within LCST boundaries without knowing its history In 1961-1963 United States Senator Richard Lugar visited LCT for meetings related to US Interstate 80 project planning; he later wrote about these meetings in his book "Lugar Years". The first roundabout interchange at I-80/Upper Ohio Rd./Indiana Hwy., just north of town center was completed northeast of town on October 10th 1963; this interchange facilitated travel between LCT & Indianapolis Airport including both local & interstate traffic . During 1965-1967 construction crews widened State Route 34 from its current four lanes through downtown LCT all the way to six lanes nears US 60 Alternate; this widening allowed more access into & out of town while providing new business opportunities for businesses downtown while keeping much of historic downtown intact On May 12th 1967 (the date still celebrated annually as “Lake station Day”) voters approved annexation by neighboring village Newburgh offering benefits such as tax immunity & enhanced services including fire protection service unavailable within LCST boundaries alone
