Lafayette, Indiana is a small town in the southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located on State Road 30 and has a population of about 2,000 people as of 2010. Lafayette was first settled in 1824 by French Canadians who founded the village of L’Aquila on the east side of Lafayette Lake. Two years later, on April 12, 1867,General Ulysses S Grant arrived in Lafayette to celebrate his celebrated Vicksburg victory over Confederate forces near Jackson Mississippi during the American Civil War. A public parade and dinner were held at Lafayettepleasure Hall where Grant delivered a speech accepting America's former Confederate states into Union territory along with Kentucky and Tennessee which became Union states following the war's conclusion; these events are considered to be marks of national significance within Purdue University's history program). After Reconstruction other businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from new companies established in rural areas such as Kokomo IN and Terre Haute IN during this time period known as "The Gilded Age".
