In 1898 Lafayette became one of several American cities incorporated into Mexico City following its independence from Spain. After World War I, many US military personnel stationed in Mexico City were discharged at San Carlos de la Florida Air Field (now Chapultepec Airport) east of town; this area now includes parts of downtown Lafayette. The result was an increased demand for housing in what is now central Lafayette, prompting developers to build new neighborhoods such as Montresor and Pointe-à-Pitre on land that had once been farmland. Lafayette, Indiana is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,402 at the 2010 census. It is one of the five cities in and around Lafayette County that are included in the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 11,735 as of 2017. Lafayette was founded by French colonists on December 10, 1753 as Fort Necessité. The town became an important military stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Revolutionary War because it was located near where many convicts were escaping to freedom. In 1814, Lafayette became the capital of Louisiana after Napoleon Bonaparte's successful invasion and occupation of that state. In 1819, Lafayette was renamed for General Jean Baptiste Jourdan who had played a significant role in helping turn back Napoleon's army at Waterloo two years earlier. His name also appears on city streets and plazas throughout Lafayette County until recently when it began to be phased out in favor of "Lafayette" statewide due to its more prominent role in history and culture here than other nearby communities such as Indianapolis or Terre Haute. The first post office was established here on November 6, 1824; it moved from Fort Necessity to what is now known as downtown Lafayette on October 12, 1830. At this point, most residents used either Stroudsburg (now Terre Haute) or Crawfordsville for mail transportation because there were no other reliable routes available at that time within what is now Lafayette County or adjacent counties (northwest then northeast). The first train service did not begin until 1865 when a rail line ran from Gary through Lafayettes downtown area; thereafter all transportation within the community relied upon buses which continue to serve today! In 1941 local businessman César Ewing donated land north of downtown for use as a airport; this project led to current-day Ballinger Airport being built next door! For more than 130 years, Lafayette has been an important center for agriculture with its own local newspapers and libraries dating back to 1825-1867 when it was known as "The Town Paper". As one of the leading manufacturers in America during much of the 19th century, Purdue University had a significant presence in Lafayette until it moved into its current campus near Westville in 1901-1902 following nearly 20 years of planning by then president James Gorges and vice president Augustus Kelley Jr.. Many famous faculty members associated with Purdue - such as Nobel laureate János Lázár - came from centralIndiana before moving on to universities around North America where they made significant contributions.
