Gun Parts History in Lafayette, Indiana began with the importation of firearms from England in 1838. The following year, Lafayette gunsmith James H. Wilkinson founded Wilkinson & Sons Arsenal and Custom House. The arsenal was devoted to the manufacture and sale of arms and ammunition. In 1849, Wilkinson opened a second armory, this one located on Race Street in downtown Lafayette. This facility became known as the Old Arsenal. In 1860, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the manufacture of cannons by civilians for use by military forces. On March 3 of that year, Lafayette's new Mayor-elect John Pemberton issued a proclamation authorizing the establishment of a cannon factory at what is now called Third and Market Streets near present-day Purdue University. The first cannon made at Third and Market Streets were two 12-pounders named "Hoop" and "Wedge." A third cannon, also called "Hoop" but larger than both previous models, was manufactured there in 1862. The three cannons were used to repel Confederate attack upon Fort Donelson on July 10th of that year; they remain listed on National Register of Historic Places listings in Lafayette today as part of “Old Fort Donelson”
