Lafayette is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Lafayette was French explorer and missionary Father Jacques Marquette on May 26, 1795. He named the village "New Fayette" after General George Washington's Army's winter encampment near present-day Indianapolis. After visiting other American sites including Fort Dearborn (now downtown Indy) and Tippecanoe Lake during his five-month journey from Milwaukee, Marquette returned to France on September 5, 1795 with news of an open water route from Canada to Louisiana that would connect the Midwest with Spanish America. Lafayette became one of many small villages established along this new road as settlers came to trade goods and build settlements in what would become northwest Indiana. The Town of Lafayette was chartered on December 2, 1814 by order of Territorial Governor David Rossiter under the name of "Indianapolis". This name honored Anthony de laSalle, 3rd Indian Chief who had helped lead an expedition against Mexican forces in 1811 which resulted in a treaty allowing American access to Allegany Territory north of the Ohio River. On November 30, 1821 the Town changed its name again – this time honoring General Andrew Jackson for his victory over Native Americans at Horseshoe Bend during the Black Hawk War - becoming known as "Lafayette". Lafayette's civic center began construction in 1907 and was dedicated on October 10th that year by then Mayor John Rooney Sr.. The building served as a city hall until it burned down in 1969. The current municipal courthouse also opened in 1907 and sat empty until it too caught fire in 1969; it has been used as office space for various local government entities since then including being used forchoes for both City Council meetings and homecoming events for high school students since 2007. Held every other year throughout July/August marks International Festivals celebrated by various community groups within Lafayettes borders: Artisans Fair (July), Craft Fair (Aug.), BBQ & Rib Festival (Sept.), Agricultural Showcase (Oct.)
