Bullets in Lafayette, Indiana date back to the 1800s. The first bullet was fired from a rifle on September 4, 1818 by Captain John C. Fremont during the Northwest Indian War. Bullet #1 was created on December 12, 1836 when Colonel Samuel Colt invented the revolver. The first large-scale ammunition production began in 1857 with the introduction of the Gatling gun. This weapon fire burst cartridges which could be reloaded multiple times and resulted in a significant increase in firepower compared to previous firearms. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant ordered an armory be built near Lafayette to produce artillery shells for the Union army during the American Civil War. The new armory became known as Fort Wayne Arsenal and produced over 400 million rounds of ammunition between 1861 and 1865. Following the end of World War II, many American factories ceased production of bullets due to technological advances such as plastic bullets and airguns. Other notable residents include David Lloyd Garrison, inventor Andrew Johnson (the first African American to be elected president), author Wm. Bulfinch (whose novel “The History Boys” was set in Lafayette), and humorist Will Rogers (who spent much time in Lafayette). Lafayette is also known for its annual Festival of Lights which features streetlights turned on throughout the city at night in commemoration of America’s independence from Great Britain.
