Lafayette is a city in and the county seat of Lafayette County, Indiana, United States. The population was 26,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was founded by French soldiers during the American Revolutionary War as Fort Lafayette on September 12, 1779. In 1814, Lafayette became an Indian trading post under the command of General David Wooster. A large new fort was built in 1825 to protect against westward encroachment and served as a military depot until it closed in 1860. The site now forms part of Purdue University's north end campus. In 1839, Indiana statehood was granted to both Indiana and Lafayette counties; Monticello (now Terre Haute) served as the capital of both states from that year until 1847 when Indianapolis became the permanent capital. The first courthouse in Lafayette was built in 1840 but burned down two years later; a new courthouse was erected and opened in 1845 which still stands today. In 1861, when Confederate forces crossed over into neighboring Kentucky and burned most of Louisville, Indiana's largest city with its rich architecture and art history—changing forever what had been called "the old Northwest" within Indiana—Lafayette took up arms against federal troops occupying that state side of the border. With help from friends among local businessmen such as Eli Browning and others who supplied munitions to make resistance possible, militia led by General John Pemberton destroyed Rebel positions around town on October 10–11 before withdrawing back across state line without battle or loss to Union forces numbering over 30 thousand men after five days of bloody combat characterized by reports of "multitudes roasted alive on public square", one contemporary observer described as one of "the bloodiest engagements ever fought between armies". It has been said that if General Pemberton had successful invaded Kentucky himself instead of withdrawing his army behind enemy lines he would have faced much greater opposition given its strategic location just outside Cincinnati across river Raisin Creek from several key Rebel supply points including Bardstown Heights where many Confederates were quartered while awaiting orders to advance further into Kentucky; this situation would not have arisen because President Abraham Lincoln ordered Pemberton not to cross into Kentucky under any circumstances due to fears for Confederate reinforcements already present there even if able to move undetected inside central Ohio waters adjacent to Cincinnati proper expecting no Resistance likely following self-imposed truce agreement reached between Union commanders generals Ulysses S Grant & Robert E Lee during previous offensives along southern border months earlier at Appomattox Court House encampment near Lexington KY - this Agreement ended all open hostilities between North & South prior to surrender at Appomattox Courthouse 4 days later on April 9th 1865 Today nearly every inch (or more)of downtown Lafayette Park occupies pre-1860 land except for sections adjoining downtowns developed since then primarily around Purdue University/northwest side campuses with sprawl continuing well beyond borders defined by original Townsite boundaries
Lafayette was founded in 1764 by Louis-Jacques Lafayette, a general in the French Revolutionary Wars. Lafayette's military successes led to his appointment as commander of the Army of Italy in 1796. He served there until 1800, when he resigned to take up a career in politics. In 1801, he was elected to the French National Assembly and became an influential figure within it. After being named president of the Republic of France in 1804, he helped negotiate its restoration after Napoleon's rule over Europe ended. In 1815, he returned to government service and played a key role in negotiating peace between France and Great Britain. He died at age 91 years old on May 14, 1834.
