The town has been served by the United States Post Office since 1845. In 1865, Lafayette became the county seat of Lafayette County. The population of Lafayette was 14,821 at the 2010 census. Lafayette was one of five original townships created within Washington Township on December 10, 1792. On November 15, 1800, Washington Township was divided into two parts; One part became known as Uniontown while the other part became known as Westport. On February 14th, 1806, both Uniontown and Westport were combined to form Lafayette Township. The first post office for Lafayette Township was established on April 16th, 1807. The name of the post office changed to Westport on October 3rd from Uniontown because it had become too difficult to keep up with changing names so quickly. The first courthouse for Lafayette County was built in 1865 and served until 1886 when it burned down due to partisan politics inside the government office building in downtown Lafayette City (now called KFC). A new courthouse was built in 1887 which still serves today as the court house for most legal cases filed within Lafayelette County including criminal cases and civil lawsuits On November 4th, 1907 an act authorizing construction of a dam across Big Creek authorized development immediately adjacent to that creek starting with 7 acres along its banks just south of what is now State Road 527 east of downtown Lafayette City In 1912 a second dam across Big Creek was authorized providing more water storage capacity for current needs while also providing access to area north and west of Interstate 95 Two years later another act authorizing additional flood control storage capacity along Big Creek authorized development beginning just upstream from that creek's mouth east of Route 30S near present day State Road 527
