The La Porte Optics Museum is a museum dedicated to the history and culture of scopes in La Porte, Indiana. The museum was founded in 1990 by Dr. Harry Hofmann, who served as the first curator. The museum has a collection of over 120 scopes from around the world, including several American-made scopes. The museum also features an exhibit on microscope technology and its history.

La Porte is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the eastern edge of Hancock County on the banks of the White River. La Porte was platted in 1834 by John Ladd and his brother-in-law, James Murchison. It became a village in 1868. LaPorte was incorporated as a town in 1911. The first settler in La Porte was George Crouch. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street and Indian Creek Road in 1834. A year later, he married Anna Shields and they moved to the area where they would live for the rest of their days. In 1835, Jonathan Laird settled nearby on land that he had acquired from Joe Neely for $5 per acre ($ today). Laird farmed until 1840 when he started trading with Native Americans from Illinois and Wisconsin fur traders who came through Hancock County searching for new land to settle. In 1841, James Murchison arrived from Scotland with his family and founded Murchison Township (now part of LaPorte) on land that he had purchased fromLaird two years earlier. By 1850, there were five families living inMurchison Township: Ladds, Halls, Herringsons, MacIntoshs and Murdochs; all but one of whom died within 10 years of settlement because of natural causes or illness caused by frontier life at this time including harsh weather conditions and disease epidemics such as measles or smallpox which swept through central Indiana during this time frame In 1861 Troup brothers Emmet & George bought 2/3 interest inMurchison Township from James Murchison Jr., making it an official township In 1865 David Darnell erected a grist mill on White River which served as the center for flour production until 1903 when it was replaced by a larger machine shop . Today LaPorte has 4historic buildings still standing that are used for local museum purposes: Grist Mill (1865), Darnell House (1903), machinery shed (1903), old post office building (1911). La Porte is a city in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 10,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of LaPorte County and home to the University of Notre Dame. The first permanent settler in what is now LaPorte County was George Fenton, who arrived in 1795. In 1814, Andrew J. Moreland founded the town of Moreland on the east side of the Grand River near present-day South Bend. He named it after his father, Pierre Moreland (1768-1829), a French Canadian general and native of Quebec who had fought for America during the War for Independence. In 1836, John Cone built a log cabin on land he purchased from Anthony Wayne within sight of what would later become La Porte City Limits. A year later he added two stories to his cabin and named it "Cone's Town". In 1840–41, Wm Henson built a small frame house on top of an old millwheel just south ofpresent-day downtown La Porte. He called it "Henson's Mill". Dupont Tavern became one of La Porte’s earliest businesses when it opened its doors in 1824 as Dupont House tavern by Nicholas Dupont (1785-1860). The building still stands today at 4th Street and State Road 2 in downtown La Porte proper; it has been used as both a restaurant and office space since then. Other early businesses included Higgins' bakery (established 1825), Piggly Wiggly store (established 1830), Brown & Son wagon shop (established 1830), Masonic Hall (establishment 1830) – all located along 3rd Street between State Road 2 and 4th Street – Holtzclaw’s grocery store which operated from about 1830 until its closure in 1856 (it reopened as an auto garage soon afterwards) and Girders’ tailor shop which operated from about 1830 until its closing shortly thereafter also located along 3rd Street between State Road 2 and 4th Street. Commerce grew rapidly during this time with transportation becoming more accessible through railroads; by 1850 there were six stores open within five blocks of each other in downtown LaPorte alone! By 1860 there were twenty-four stores open within five blocks of each other! This growth was due largely to American Indian trade which continued unabated even after General James Kossuth's invasion into Indiana in September 1800 led to Ulysses S Grant's proclamation that all Indian Trade must stop!trade with any nation whatsoever was forbidden under federal law! However, because many local farmers could not resist growing crops such as potatoes or corn they remained profitable even though their goods couldn't be sold without bought directly from Native Americans!
On November 4, 1834, La Porte was founded by the Potawatomies. The town was named for General David Porter, who had led an army against the Shawnees in 1813.
