La Porte is an unincorporated community located in LaPorte Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana. The population was 269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village site was laid out by a group of French settlers in 1824 and named after Pierre- Jean LaPorte, who had come to this area from Ottawa, Canada that year. A post office was established at La Porte in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1857, the first steamboat arrive here on the river scene; she brought passengers and cargo from Vandalia to Terre Haute on her return trip from Fort Wayne. The town grew rapidly around these early arrivals, with many large frame houses being built during this time. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living here and some commercial businesses had been opened such as a grocery store and flour mill. By 1890, most of the original French homes had been replaced by larger English styled structures which remain today as part of the local landscape (although a few smaller buildings have also been preserved). During this time period too many new settlements were popping up all around central Indiana due to railroad development – La Porte wasn’t one of them! In 1907 however, when Wabash Railway Company made their presence known through construction of a line running through town center ( concurrent with growth elsewhere along the railway), La Porte’s status changed abruptly – it became one of those communities quickly targeted for demolition! To date no physical evidence remains to support this claim though 😉 During World War II much activity took place here including heavy manufacturing for war efforts; however since 1945 most residents have moved away or left for other rural villages within St Joseph County or outside central Indiana altogether…….. but never forget our little town that once thrived thanks to its proximity to both big city amenities AND some great old fashioned American values!

In 1814, La Porte was founded as a small town in what is now Evansville, Indiana. It grew quickly due to its location and the timber resources it enjoyed. In 1829, La Porte became the county seat of Benton County. The town continued to grow and by 1840 had a population of 3,500 residents. By 1850, La Porte had reached its peak with a population of 10,000 people. However, because of the Panic of 1857 and the Indian Wars that followed, La Porte’s growth slowed significantly. In 1860, La Porte was annexed by Indianapolis as part of the city-state of Indianapolis. LaPorte experienced significant growth during the 19th century thanks to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to timber resources. The town’s industry included manufacturing such as clothiering and wagonmaking; however, this prosperity also led to some problems such as corruption and social unrest. The Panic of 1893 caused great interest in land in Indiana due to low prices for agricultural land; however, this investment failed to pan out and LaPorte lost much of its wealth in did not experience renewed growth until after World War II when new transportation opportunities made it easier for goods and people to move around the state. Today, LaPorte is an important community located within Indianapolis proper; it has a population over 10,000 people (2010), persists from major economic development during both post-war years (1946-1990) while continuing cultural vibrancy through events like art exhibits or musical festivals which have drawn crowds numbering into the thousands since 1880).
In the 1800s, La Porte was a small community on the banks of the Ohio River. It was a manufacturing town and home to many businesses, including two sawmills. The town's first post office was established in 1811. La Porte was also the birthplace of General George Washington.
