La Porte is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original settlement in what is now La Porte was called Prentiss and was located on the eastern edge of present-day LaPorte. The first post office in La Porte was established in 1856 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler to come to this area were Abram Prentiss and his family who arrived from Illinois on November 14, 1849. They built a log cabin on land that they had acquired from the state of Michigan for $5 per acre (adjusted for inflation). The town took form around a schoolhouse which was built about 1840 by George Washington Garland. A Methodist Episcopal church was erected in 1853 by Reverend John Wesley Payne and dedicated on October 25th. A gristmill with power supplied by the Des Moines River ran until it went out of business circa 1890; however, its history can be traced back to 1795 when James Hutton bought an acre lot downriver from where it operated and constructed a millinery shop which he named “Hutton’s Mill” after himself and his son-in-law David Hoskins (1775-1840). A post office called Greenfield opened at Greenfield on December 12, 1860, serving residents of both LaPorte County as well as neighboring Dearborn County until it closed upon the merger of those counties into Terre Haute Township on January 1st 1909. In 1868 Isaac Hecker settled near present day LaPorte along with twenty others including two brothers Captains John Fenton and Isaac Hecker who founded Hecker’s Ford about one mile east of today’s intersection of Ulysses Road/Highway 219 W & High School Road/Parsons Road NW/Hecker Rd./Dutch Woods Rd./Atwater Rd./Old US 31 N & Old US 31 E property line south @ approximately 4100 feet above sea level surrounded by high limestone hillsides he named “Hecker Heights” or simply “Highlands” later shortened to Highlands due to fears that people would confuse him with another pioneer name Adam Hecker who also settled thereabouts some time prior to the year 1830 according to county records As late as 1911 many farmers still continued calling their home just Highlands even though their farm ended up being located 3 miles southwest corner I-465 # 37491 la porte iluviana

The first European to visit what is now La Porte was French trader Pierre- Jean de la Salle on September 8, 1679. He named it after his trading post at Fort Dearborn on the mouth of the White River in Michigan Territory. In 1802, David Axe founded an agricultural village called Axe's Mills on land that he claimed from his father-in-law John Crouch. The town sprang up around this new settlement and gradually grew until it had a population of over 1,000 people by 1824. A schoolhouse and courthouse were built in 1825; both are still standing today. In 1830, La Porte became a stop for stagecoaches between Lafayette (Inkster) and Chicago; however, this service ceased when railroads came into operation. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), La Porte served as headquarters for Union General James Halleck during the Battle of Perryville before being taken by Confederate General Robert Ewell during Chapin's Raid northeast of Indianapolis on November 12th 1863 Axe's Mills was burned down by order of Gen Joseph Totten in 1865 while supplies were being brought across the river to Union forces fighting at Vicksburg Mississippi In 1870–71, $2 million was invested in improving transportation infrastructure including a railroad through LaPorte which connected with other cities in Indiana and Illinois After years of debate over whether or not to build a canal through central Indiana due to lack of Available Land or Funding,[1] construction began on July 15th 1875 under the leadership of Mayor Hiram Lodge Jr., Sr., with funding provided by George Croghan[2] The canal opened to traffic on October 24th 1876! This event marks one hundred years since LaPorte became an incorporated community! The original downtown commercial district still exists today with more than seventy businesses located within a two mile radius . Today’s downtown includes several blocks along State Street between Fifth Avenue and Keystone Avenue
In 1814, La Porte was the home of General James K. Polk and his wife Julia. In 1856, it was the location of a slave auction.
