The first school in La Porte opened in 1837. A post office was established in La Porte on March 2, 1840. The first store was built in 1850 by Abram Crouch and Crouse & Schmitt. In 1861, a schoolhouse replaced the old store building but it burned down within 5 years. A new schoolhouse wasbuilt in 1886 and lasted until it too burned down in 1914. A railroad station was built at LaPorte about 1900 and served as the town's primary business center for many years; however, this facility also became one of its most unsuccessful when it closed around 1960 due to lack of demand from travelers on the then-new Interstate 665 corridor which crossed through town east to west (the current route of I-465). In recent years, several businesses have opened up downtown including a hair salon/spa/, an antique shop/gallery/, a truck stop diner/, and even a video game store/. In addition to these businesses there are several restaurants along Main Street including Bennigan's seafood restaurant (), Subway (), Chili's (), Five Guys () and White Castle ().

La Porte, Indiana is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now La Porte County was James Dickey in 1814. He and his family were preceded by two other families who arrived in 1811 and 1812. One of these families was the Bogart family from Kentucky. James Dickey was the son of John Dickey and Anna Bogart (born about 1793). In 1814 James Dickey married Lydia Copley (born about 1800) and they had six children: James Jr., Nancy (born about 1815), William Copley (1817-1892), Susannah Copley (1819-1900), Lucy Jephcott(1821-1900), and John A.Dickey(1823-1901). In 1830 Daniel Boone became one of the first white men to explore what are now La Porte County when he went upriver on the Kankakee River with a group of friends in search for a new home for himself and his family after leaving Kentucky forsworn to pursue an agricultural career. When he returned from his journey he reported that there were numerous large tracts of land available downstream for settlement if someone could find a way to get downriver to them. This led to an important development in La Porte history as it opened up what are now some of the most fertile farming valleys east of Chicago – areas which would become central Illinois during the late 19th century when people started moving westward into this region searching for new opportunities because eastern Michigan had been lost to Indian tribes during this period known as "The Great Lakes Slave Trade." In 1830 Daniel Boone also erected a log cabin near present day Uniontown on Chainawanna Creek which served as his headquarters until moved southward around 1840 when he founded what is todayLaPorte County government buildings located along Main Street – still used today by county officials including its current courthouse Annex Building managed by University Park Land Management Company LLC d/b/a The University Place Group Incorporated since 1978 In 1833 two brothers named Isaac Newton & John Ritchie built a cabin near present day White Hall on Little Miami River just north of where it joins Big Miami River – this cabin remains standing today next door to Ironton State Park off US 28 just east of Race Road 522 . After spending several months living among Indians at Fort Dearborn opposite Watertown on Lake Erie they decided that their best chance lay upstream across the larger body of water known as The Wabash or Hoosier Rivers which connected those rivers at points east and west near Indianapolis . La Porte's growth continued during the Indiana Territory era, with an aggressive business community sponsoring construction of schools, churches and other public buildings. The town's rapid development led to its nickname "The Hub of the World." During the American Civil War, La Porte became an important military supply depot for Union forces moving southward through Indiana. In 1865, LaPorte was renamed Indianapolis after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped lead the Union invasion of southern Indiana that year. The city experienced significant growth during the 20th century; it became one of America's most populous cities in the 1960s and 1970s and has seen dramatic population increases since 2000.
