La Porte, Indiana is a small town in the US state of Indiana. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. LaPorte is located in La Porte County. LaPorte is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to The Ohio State University and Purdue University. The first residents of LaPorte were farmers who soon realized that they could not grow crops without irrigation water from the nearby river. They built two dams on the river and had to use their own labor to get water for their fields and homes. In 1909, when an oil well was discovered nearby, people from La Porte began to live as settlers in what would become known as "The Town." In 1930, when new Interstate 65 was completed through Indiana, parts of La Porte became connected with it by way of a bypass road. This made it easier for people living near I-65 to getto work or school; however, it also made it more difficult for businesses in other parts of the town to remain open because they now had to drive into central LaPorte instead of having their products delivered right to their door! In 1984, after years of discussion and planning by then-Mayor John Cross (now a member of the United States House Committee on Education andthe Workforce), plans were unveiled for a new high school called "Central High" which would sit on land that once housed three small stores adjacent each other on Second Street between North Avenue and Paper Mill Road (now Josephine Drive). Central High opened its doors in September 1984 and quickly became known as one ofLaPorter's most popular schools dueits excellent physical conditions as well as its opportunities for student success inside and outside the classroom!

La Porte is a small town in La Porte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first people to live in LaPorte were the Potters who arrived there in 1814. They were followed by the Smiths in 1827 and then the Rankins in 1830. In 1836, John Rankin built a log cabin on what is now State Street. In 1840, Jasper Rankin born in La Porte County brought his family to this location and began growing corn and wheat on his farmstead which he named "Rankin's Landing." In 1846, John Rankin married Margaret Webber from Weakley County and moved his family to their new home about one mile (1 km) east of where they had first settled. The Rankins continued to live there until their death in 1903. In 1847-49, Ira Haines lived at "Pine Gap" on Middle Creek near present day Parkersburg before moving to what is now LaPorte County to open a mill there. He operated it until 1861 when he closed it down due to bad weatherand financial difficulties. A few years later he opened another mill some three miles (5 km) south of where he had first located it on Big Creek Rd., but this mill also failed within a few years due largely to an overabundance of water caused by heavy rains upstream that year alone He next set up shop at what is now State Street between Third and Fourth Streets between1859-61; after several years however he too failed with money problems associated with increased competition from other entrepreneurs residing around him Thereafter for many years LaPorte remained primarily an agricultural community as well as serving as a stopover for travelers along US 55 northbound into Illinois reopening its post office finally occurred on October 25th 1957 after more than 50 years without one Later still during the 1960s restaurateurs such as Don Weisman reopened several businesses including Joes Pizza which remains open todayserving Neopolitan pizza since 1978
The La Porte community was founded in 1828. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1875, the town became a village and was renamed La Porte.
