La Porte is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now La Porte was Jacob Davis who arrived in 1814. At that time it was a small village with just under 100 people and 9 land grants. The first post office was established in 1827 and it operated for 3 years before being moved to Peru. In 1838 La Porte had a population of 375 and by 1840 it had grown to 1,500 residents with over 50 businesses. By 1860 the population had swollen to 3,000 and by 1870 it had increased to 5,000 residents with over 100 businesses. In 1887 La Porte became an incorporated community when all of its land boundaries were changed from Township to Village form following the consolidation of many smaller communities around Terre Haute into one larger area. In 1912 La Porte voters passed a referendum authorizing the creation of a city government which would be separate from the township government but still answer to township trustees. On December 2nd 1912 LaPorte City began operations as an unincorporated community with a population of 805 people including 486 citizens of the new city government which was organized on February 15th 1913 after two months of debate between local officials and citizens who voted 71% against secession from township control while only 29% favored incorporation into the new city government. On November 17th 1922 La Porte Mayor Charles Fenton announced his candidacy for mayoralty against incumbent John Hickey who narrowly won reelection despite receiving only 54% of the vote (the lower turnout due to World War I Martial Law). After winning election Fenton made history by becoming the first mayor inLaPorte history to serve consecutive terms without running for re-election (the tradition among mayors then continued until current day). After serving as mayor for 22 years he announced his retirement on January 25th 2006 stating "It has been my privilege and honor as your Mayor heretofore have served you all during these exciting times". He will be succeeded by his wife Lisa who will serve until September 2007 when she will be termlimited afterMXI yearshe will also run for re-election but lose handily against her opponent Arlene Wiseman

In the early 1970s, shoulder-fired handguns became popular among law enforcement officers and military personnel in North America. To fit these individuals into existing police departments’ carrying methods, manufacturers started designing shoulder-fired handgun carriers that would allow officers to fire their handguns while wearing uniforms without fear of damaging or losing theirweapon(s). The popularity of these carriers led eventuallyto prohibition against shoulder-fired handguns by most jurisdictions in North America until recently when laws governing concealed carry have changed citing public safety concerns over officer fatalities caused by gunfire while wearing uniforms (Anderson v Holder).

On January 1, 1924, its charter as a city was revoked because of financial troubles caused by Prohibition-era America's Great Depression.
