This resulted in a severe drought that year which caused many families to leave their homes for lack of food or water. As a result, many businesses closed down or moved out of town during this time period. In 1916, Mayor John Ahern ordered the demolition of all buildings located within 1/2 mile (0.8 km)of City Hall due to concerns about flooding during heavy rains season. This order helped create what is now known as "The Waterfront" area which has seen significant redevelopment since then including new shopping malls, office buildings, hotels - most notably Hyatt Regency Hotel - and several large residential tracts along Michigan Avenue near Soldier Field football stadium among others
The first post office in La Porte, Indiana was established on November 15, 1823. The town was named after the then-recently-founded port of LaPorte, Illinois.
