In 1865, Samuel Sanger opened up what is now called "The Old Post Office" in downtown LaPorte which quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in the community. In 1870-71, Rev William Byrd organized a Methodist church here which quickly grew into one of the largest religious groups active inLaPorte at that time. In 1907-08, local entrepreneurs Harry Crouch and Frank Hecker developed an oil refinery on Dearborn Street east of downtown LaPorte which soon became one of the most successful businesses within their industry in south central Indiana. Over time other local businesses also emerged including The Butcher Shop (now known as legally available grocery store), Grits 'n Grains (now known as restaurant), Lula's Cafeteria (now closed), and numerous other small enterprises catering to local needs until 2001 when they all merged together under One Stop mall banner to form present day Macy's Corporation

They built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the then-town of LaPorte and started to trade goods with the surrounding settlements. In 1827, they founded what would become La Porte Township. The township was organized on March 3, 1830 by John Sowell and James Richardson. In 1838, Daniel Boone set up his home in what is now La Porte Township and began to explore this area for new land to settle. He found good farmland near present-day Terre Haute and brought some of his family members over to start a new life here. Over time, other pioneers joined Boone in Settlement Number Two and many more families moved into this area during the 1800s. Today's downtown La Porte was built up around these pioneer days when people came together to trade goods and experience one another's culture firsthand. Many early businesses established themselves here including an ice cream parlor (now closed), post office (1890), bakery (1894), grocery store (1905), feed store (1911), bank (1920), doctor's office (1925) and movie theater (1976). Additionally, many homes were built as duplexes or triplexes back then which continue to be popular today as rental units or vacation rentals.

LaPorte's growth stalled after the Civil War, but resumed in the late 19th century as other efforts to settle the area failed. However, recent redevelopment has brought back some activity to the town center and has seen it rebound into middle-class status.
