La Porte was a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States for over 200 years. The community was located on the east bank of the White River and its original name was "Porter". In 1851, LaPorte's post office was renamed to "LaPorte" after General Anthony Wayne. LaPorte had a population of about 350 people when it became an independent town in 1881. It lost its independence in 1907 when Hancock County was merged into the larger city of Indianapolis. The community is named after Commodore John P. Porter who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Commandant of the Fort Wayne garrison during the American Civil War. Porter also donated land to form what is now La Porte Township. The first settler in La Porte was James Braidwood who arrived in 1788 with his family from England. By 1830, there were twenty families living at La Porte including five farmers, foursmiths, two teachers and one laborer. During the 1840s, many Englishmen immigrated to America and founded small towns such as Clinton (now part of Chicago), West Point and Rochester (now within New York City). One reason for this large influx of immigrants may have been Illinois' cheap labor prices which made farming possible for new arrivals. Many Irish also settled in America during this time as well although their numbers are unknown due to lack of documentation or research done on that topic by historians. In 1851, one-hundred thirty people lived at LaPorte while it had a population estimated at 350 by 1870; however, by 1907 it had decreased to just seventy-six residents due to heavy out-migration from la porte during that time period caused by changes brought about by industrialization throughout Indiana as well As economic decline throughout much of rural America following World War I . In 1800 Census records indicate that only three families lived at Portertown with no permanent residents present since most settlers came transiently or moved frequently depending on opportunities available within their respective regions . Settlement began slowly because transportation costs were high back then especially since goods could not be transported overland across open trails much like they can now . By 1840 only six families resided here permanently with several moving back and forth between sites until final consolidation took place around 1860 when all but one family resided here permanently making la porte one continuous village . This final merger didn’t happen overnight however as many negotiations took place between various members of both villages prior to any formal agreement being reached .. One group led by Captain John Tatum negotiated successfully reducing taxes rates levied against Hammondsville while others attempted unsuccessfully to bring peace between these two villages through friendly visits or letters received from Mayor David Waddell Although efforts did occur some progress could not be made so la porte formally seceded from Hammondsville becoming an unincorporated community once again
