In 1851, La Porte was founded by Isaac Hull as a small community on the current site of Purdue University. The town grew rapidly in the late 1800s, and by 1920 had a population of over 1,000. In 1914, La Porte became an incorporated city. In 1925, it merged with Indianapolis to form the newly created Hoosier State region. La Porte continued to grow rapidly during this time, reaching its peak population of 4,500 in 1940. However, during World War IILa Porte experienced a significant decline in population due to wartime military activities and the impact of the Depression. By 1950, LaPorte had shrunk to its current size of around 500 residents.

It is named after David Porter LaPorte, one of the original settlers of that area. The first post office in La Porte was established in 1839. In 1870, the community became a railway station on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway (CRI). The CRI closed down in 1984 and all tracks were removed; however, some remnants remain today as part of the now-defunct Indianapolis suburb of Notre Dame de Lourdes. David Porter LaPorte donated land to build what is now La Porte High School; it opened in 1907. In 1928, the high school moved to its present location on three acres adjacent to Stroud Elementary School which had been built previous year on nearby farm land belonging to Mrs. Edwin Ketcham (née Hildebrandt). That same year saw the construction of an addition to La Porte High School which would become known as "The Great Hall" - still standing and used today as a gymnasium/multi-purpose room for both boys and girls alike! In 1936, Mrs. Ketcham donated $5 million towards development of what would become Purdue University - making it one of only two such donations ever made by individuals to US universities (the other being Ford Motor Company's $100 million gift to Stanford University). Over time more buildings have been added including a library (opened in 1962), new tennis courts (opened in 1988), a football stadium (opened in 2006) - all while still using "The Great Hall" as their main building!
