The early years of World War I were difficult for Kokomo; its main industry was agriculture, which Output dropped 50% during 1916-1917 due to war-related factors (e.g., food shortages). However, post-war prosperity increased agricultural production while creating new jobs in textiles, plastics and other sectors. By 1951, however, Kokomo's population had shrunk to under 20 thousand people due largely to settling rural migrants from surrounding states into its dwindling city limits.
