The Kokomo Gun Case Company was a prominent soft gun case company in Kokomo, Indiana from the 1930s to the 1990s. The company was established by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Smith in 1933 and continued operation until their retirement in 1994. The company made Cases for both pistols and revolvers, as well as cases for shotguns and rifles. In addition to their cases, the Smiths also manufactured various other soft gun items such as holsters, lanyards, straps, and decals. Kokomo Gun Case Company products were often exported to other parts of the United States and Canada due to their popularity among shooters across those countries. In 1951, Mr. Smith founded Canadian Softgun Manufacturing Ltd., which manufacturing cases for handguns and rifles in Canada until its bankruptcy in 1993. Until his death in 1996, Mr. Smith was responsible for all aspects of Kokomo GunCase Company operations including sales and marketing; production; distribution; shipping/receiving; customer service; product development/testing; research & development; financial stability of the business.; management of inventory.; leadership of the Kokomo GunCase Company relicensing program.) The Kokomo GunCase Company operated out of three main locations: a small storefront on State Street near Old Thompson Road (later known as The Armory), an old garage on Main Street next door to J&L Bicycles (later known as Colonial Ballistics), and a larger facility located at 701 Wabash Avenue ( later known as Gadsden Arms). Kokomo is a small town in Indiana, United States. The population was 5,631 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is the smallest of the five cities in Kane County and is located on the eastern edge of the county. Kokomo began as a small village named after its founder, Solomon Day, in 1879. The original town plat was filed on December 20, 1881. It grew rapidly due to new development around it and by 1902 it had a population of 1,023 residents. In 1906, Kokomo incorporated as a city and continued to grow quickly until its peak in 1920 with 2,811 residents. However, during World War I Kokomo's economy failed and the city lost many jobs; however, it recovered rapidly after 1919 thanks to support from local businesses and individuals within the community. The post-war years were difficult for Kokomo as many businesses closed down or relocated to larger towns because of economic competition from elsewhere in Kane County. However, over time some of these businesses have returned and currently make up much of the town's economy: • First National Bank: founded in 1915 by George Fenton (a native of Kokomo) and his brother Edmond Fenton; first opened its doors in downtown Kokomo • American Cycle Shop: one of only two bike stores open during World War II (the other being Sears); founded by Harry Knopper who also ran an insurance agency adjacent to First National Bank • Eastern Radiography Laboratory: established 1946; provides medical imaging services including ultrasounds for diagnosing health problems Kokoma has undergone several incarnations since its founding - most notably as a satellite community serving Kane County until 2003 when it became an independent city again following annexation by Indianapolis In recent years there has been increased focus on arts & culture within the community with various festivals & events regularly taking place throughout the year including Artistic Nights staged at The Arts Center annually since 2006 which features art displays from local artists followed by wine tastings at nearby vineyards
