Kokomo, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana and the seat of Kokomo Township. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kokomo were the Potawatomi Indians. They arrived in the area around 1800 and cleared forests for agriculture and trade. An early settler, James Weir, named his farm after Lord Baltimore, who had donated land to them in 1795. In 1851, lumberman John Goodyear built a sawmill on the banks of the White River near present-day Kokomo. The mill became one of Kokomo's most important economic engines during its early years. Kokomo was incorporated as a township on November 3, 1872, from portions of Porter Township and Union Township. The original plat for Kokomo included only about two-thirds of present-day downtown; most of what exists today was developed over time as businesses moved into and grew within the limits of the city limits annexed by Kokomo in 1959 (see annexation controversy). 1) On July 1, 1959, much of central Kokomoland including parts east of I-65 were annexed by Indianapolis as part of an effort to improve infrastructure while keeping more affordable prices for residents within city boundaries
