Kokomo is a city in and the county seat of Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,569 at the 2010 census. Kokomo was founded in 1824 by Captain John A. Marshall and his family as a small farming community on the east bank of the White River. The town name comes from French "kokomont," meaning "lost." The first post office in Kokomo opened in 1827. In 1840, the area became part of Terre Haute, Illinois when that city was created from parts of Kosciusko and other counties. In 1851, Kokomo become an independent municipality with its own government. It entered into a joint trade agreement with Chicago in 1861 and remained an independent municipality until it merged with Terre Haute on July 1, 1865. On November 5, 1872, the town annexed the adjacent village of Westville to increase its population to 12 residents; however this annexation failed because Westville did not have referendum approval from voters. By 1880, Kokomo had reached its present size with 30 homes and 100 businesses. In 1941–1942 World War II saw significant growth for Kokomo due to wartime production by General Motors Corporation (GMC). GMC built several factories within Kokomo including their Research Park which produced components for military vehicles such as tanks and planes; these factories remain active today as GMC's corporate headquarters are located there also.. Following World War II there were declines in manufacturing activity throughout Indiana but Kokomo continued to grow rapidly due to new housing development along White River Boulevard which attracted many high-paying jobs during the 1950s and early 1960s when Lake Michigan filled up with water caused by construction projects around downtown Kokoman

Kokomo was founded in 1837 by John Kokomo and his wife, Sarah. The town was originally called "Creekville." In 1853, the name of the town was changed to "Kokomo." The first post office in Kokomo opened on July 1, 1853. The first store in Kokomo opened on November 8, 1853. The first physical education school in Kokomo opened on December 10, 1853. In 1865, the successful railroad company Indiana Central Railroad donated land to make way for a new station at Kokomo. The new station was built and named after General George Armstrong Custer who died during the American Civil War at the age of 29. On November 15, 1889, Kokomo became a city with a population of 55 residents. On January 1, 1907, it became an independent city again with a population of 100 residents. On January 1, 1912 it merged into the larger city of Indianapolis.
