Kokomo, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Hoosier Hills and is part of the Indianapolis-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kokomo is one of several towns in central Indiana that are home to Purdue University. The first Europeans to visit Kokomo were French traders and missionaries in 1788. The town was founded by Nicholas Joliet and his brother, Pierre Joliet, in 1824 as a stop on their journey from Vincennes,Indiana to St Louis, Missouri. They named their town after Jean Baptiste Kokonnac, a local Indian chief who had helped them find their way across the great Canadian River during their survey of this area. In 1827, John Pugh purchased land east of present-day Kokomo from Nicholas Joliet for $5 per acre. This land would become the nucleus of Purdue University's present campus site. In 1887–88, William Hargrave built the first permanent school building in Kokomo – now known as Wm Hargrave Hall – and it served as the community's primary educational institution until 1915 when Purdue University began admitting women students into its male-only undergraduate program. During World War II it was home to various military bases including Fort Knox and Goodyear Air Force Base; many Kokomo residents also served in war efforts through service in the United States Army or Navy (including two men who became generals). Today much of what used to be downtown Kokomo has been replaced by new development around Purdue University’s main campus – including an outdoor shopping mall known as Main Street Central – which retains much of its historical character despite redevelopment efforts over time. The following year saw another significant event when Gouverneur Morris donated 1/3rd interest in his estate near New Albany (now Terre Haute) to help finance construction of what would become Immaculate Conception High School – now Purdue Polytechnic Institute - and Hoyt Rucker Library on its original site north side Of Main Street Central (now called “Hoyt Rucker Park”). today’s library complex forms much of today's downtown footprint for Kokomo!

In 1986, a study conducted by NASA found that exposure to pepper spray above levels considered safe for humans caused headaches, dizziness, nosebleeds and nausea among workers operating space shuttles exposed to it during launch missions. These reports led Congress to pass the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987 (NDAA) which banned military members from using pepper spray without first obtaining written approval from their commanding officer. In 1990s and 2000s there were several outbreaks of violence targeting religious communities across America following terrorist attacks such as September 11th attacks. As a result of these events police departments began To deploy Mace devices as crowd control methods instead of pepper Spray as it had some advantages including being less likely to cause serious injury or death when used correctly under controlled circumstances; however these deployments occurred mainly outside large population centers where there was potential for more serious consequences if deployed accidentally within crowds or in areas with high concentrations of people

Kokomo was founded in 1839 by pioneers who set out from Greencastle, Indiana to find new land after an American Civil War victory over General Andrew Jackson's army. The town name means "place where the water flows." Kokomo has a rich history that can be found throughout its community and surrounding countryside. The town began as a trading post on the White River near present-day Kokomo. In 1839, two men named Levi Winchester and John Brown built a log cabin here and started trade with Native Americans for goods such as maize and deer meat. In 1842, Winchester discovered oil shale deposits in nearby Connersville and decided to develop them into a profitable business. He named his company Kashmere Oil & Gas Company after his home county of Hampshire, England. Kokomo became one of Kashmere's main production sites during this time period. The first store was opened here in 1845 by Jordon Wiles under the name Prentiss Drug Store Incorporated . By 1865, when it merged with George Wiles' drugstore chain to become Copley Pharmacy & Warehouse Co., Kokomi had become one of America's largest commercial towns for retail pharmacy services In 1907, Kokomo were renamed after General Dwight D Eisenhower during World War II due to patriotic support for the war effort KOKOMO THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR
