This fort served as a trading post between Indian tribes and white traders until it was abandoned around 1830. The first school in Kokomo was built in 1836 by Revs. Samuel Wirthlin and James Fenton under the direction of Maj.-Gen Adam Clayton Powell Jr.. The school continued to be operated until 1862 when it became known as East High School after it moved to its current location on Highland Avenue. During World War I, Kokomo played an important role within United States military policy as a munitions depot for aircraft production at nearby Muncie Airport. After 1918, most manufacturing activity stopped at Muncie Airport but some jobs did continue out west such as construction work for General Motors during their plant expansion eastward into Muncie Township from 1929-1930 Additionally during this time many small businesses were founded throughout downtown where there still remains active commercial activity today including 2 convenience stores (JPMC & KFC), 4 restaurants (Bojangles', Chili's & Pizza Hut), 2 banks (First National Bank & Wells Fargo) and 3 pharmacies (Allegheny Family Drugs & Rite Aid). Kokomi's economic vitality has been due to its numerous industrial businesses including: Alcoa Aluminum Company; Beechcraft Corporation; Boeing Company; Cargill Inc.; Dodge Aircraft Division; Ford Motor Company; Goodyear Tire And Rubber Co.; IBM ; Keystone Industries; Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Division - Corporate Headquarters - Orion Missile Factory - Monterrey AB - electronic parts manufacturing company ATK Defense Products Incorporated ; Lucas Oil Companies Limited ; Nike shoes (); Opel AG . During recent decades there have been several expansions/additions to the city including: First Midwest Bank / RBC Capital Markets LLC (); Great American Ballpark (); Independence Mall (); Stearns Cosmetics () – one side effects being increased traffic congestion on local streets which has led to attempts by Mayor Tom Weisner to install signals or dedicated lanes for vehicular traffic only access arterial streets running through downtown while allowing parkingLot parking along 5th Street so that retail development can occur without impacting trafficspace .

The village grew quickly due to its location near Watertown (now Terre Haute) and other railroads that served the area at the time. In 1825, two years after settlement began and prior to becoming an incorporated city under Indiana law, West Bend Township merged into Kokomo Township; this merger created what is now known as Kokomo proper within Kokomo Township although some portions still remain within West Bend Township including West Side Cemetery which dates back to 1888 and resides within part of today's north side suburb of Kokomona also known as White Sands developments when they were developed between 1923-1927 which are now part of Indianola west side suburbs also known as Kipling Park located adjacent to I-465 just south/northwest corner where former Walmart Supercenter used to be located until 2013 when it closed down followed by another large store Peet's Coffee & Tea across street Pioneer Cabin Store open since 1886 beforeclosed recently reopened inside old post office building on SW corner Third Street since 1951 First Baptist Church built on lot northeast/southwest corner Third Street 1912 tornado damage destroyed much downtown business early 1933 reopening later that year same owners moved out & replaced interior plastering WW II Japanese Internment Camps located nearby during World War II United States Army Reserve Armory opened 1945 Near future there will be development around large heavy industrial park being developed which will impact both neighborhoods
