Kokomo, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is part of the Elkhart County seat and it is also home to the Kokomo Art Museum. The city was founded in 1874 by George W. Hargrave and contains no incorporated areas other than its downtown. The Kokomo area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, and evidence of early human activity can be found throughout the community today. One of the earliest known settlements in Kokomo was built on land that now includes much of the downtown district. In 1874, George W. Hargrave established what is now called "Hargrave's Grove" as a farmstead near the present day intersection of State Road 8 and State Route 146A. This area would eventually become one of Kokomo's most prominent commercial districts during its early years - hosting such businesses as Gresham grocery store, JONES & BECK cigar store, Harris Hardware Store, Post Office (established 1875), and several restaurants including Pahrump House Cafeteria (established 1880). Kokomo grew rapidly during World War I; by 1918 it had attained a population of over 5,000 people living within a radius of 1 mile (1 km). However, following World War I there were significant declines in Kokomo's population due to various factors such as loss of jobs in manufacturing sectors brought about by technological advances or World War II-related military conscription quotas. In fact, after reaching its peak population levels around 1951 –2 ,the city experienced significant decline until 2005 when it regained some level of growth through annexations from neighboring townships

Kokomo is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located in Kokomo Township. The population was 1,820 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is home to the Kokomo Military Air Station, which is one of four military airfields in Indiana, along with Fort Wayne International Airport and Carmel-by-the-Sea Naval Air Station. The first settler in Kokomo was John Sevier who arrived on July 5, 1824 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and businesses began as storekeepers and farmers started raising crops to sell to local customers or provide goods for trade with other nearby communities such as Terre Haute and Lafayette. In 1840, James Gentry founded a gristmill on the current site of First Street; this mill continued operation until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. In 1846, the US Army completed construction of Fort Harrison on land that had been donated by Captain Jonathan Moultrie of Terre Haute; this fort became known as Fort Harrison after Union General David Hunter named it for him during his command of the army during the Indian Wars era (1853-1865). By 1860, there were 10 buildings at Fort Harrison: three barracks for soldiers and their families including officers’ quarters, a hospital for wounded soldiers and others under medical care, an arsenal containing artillery projectiles and shot putters/shotguns used by garrison troopsmen for target practice against Indians living near by; two stores each for clothing, provisions (including cannon fodder) and hardware; an engine house housing a steam engine used to power wagons carrying ammunition upriver to Fort Harrison; an oven used to bake bread at night while men worked in shoprooms adjacent to barracks; six rifle ranges connected by two roads providing cover from enemy gunfire while troops drilled outside; two miles (3 km) long engineering road leading eastward from fortifications out into Prairie County . During its time as part of Union forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Ft. Harrison played an important role defensively guarding easternIndianaagainst Confederate attack from Tippecanoe County towards Louisville – one mile (1 km) east of present day Ft. Harrison Gate – due in large part to its position within easy reach of both Terre Haute would-be attackers– Major General Oliver Otis Howard’s 2nd Brigade Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment flanked south side of White River crossing over Whites Ferry just northeast of present day Ft Higbee Road Bridge about seven miles southeast from present day Monroeville Junction . On October 12th 1861 Union Colonel Edwin Vail ordered all male residents between 17 years old and 55 years old without dependents westsideofIndianapolisto leave Indianapolis ; those individuals moved into tents set up along White River north sideofFtHarrisonGate where they remained until February 1862 when they were allowed back into Indianapolis . On February 14th 1862 orders were issued ordering all males age 16 or younger eastsideofIndianapolisto leave their homes pending instructions as to their future treatment . Most people received transportation offenorthwest Side but some people decided not too turn around so they just walked away I asked one man if he wanted help getting his family across he said “no” so I left him alone
Kokomo was founded in 1847 by the Kokomo Hoosiers. The town was named after John C. Kokomo, a landowner who donated the land for the settlement. The first settlers arrived in 1848 and made their home on what is now Main Street. By 1850, the community had a post office, school, and churches. In 1862, Kokomo became a county seat of Johnson County and remained so until it was abolished in 1970. The population of Kokomo reached 14,000 by 1880 and peaked at 25,000 in 1920. However, during World War II Kokomo saw large influxes of refugees as displaced persons from German-controlled Europe came to the area to escape war or persecution. The population has since declined again to around 10,000 today.
