By 1849, Kokomo had a population of over 640 people. The town's growth continued until the early 1880s when there was a significant decrease in population due to expansions into neighboring towns and moves away from agricultural production. The residential area that now surrounds Kokomo was first settled by German settlers in the late 1700s and early 1800s. A number of churches were built in this area including one called "Staatskirche" (State Church) which still stands today. The church served as the primary religious center for many residents of eastern Hendricks County until after World War II when nearby Terre Haute became more important as an industrial center. Kokomo experienced its most significant development during the late 19th century when railroad construction began throughout central Indiana. Many businesses opened up in Kokomo during this time such as lumber yards, breweries, cotton ginners and others responsible for helping to develop the city's infrastructure and economy along with creating new jobs for local citizens. One of Kokomos most famous residents during this time was George Witte who came to Kokomo around 1875 to open a grocery store on Main Street (now US-31). Witte would later become one of America's leading photographer assistants working for various major newspapers across America before passing away at age 98 in2006.
