Kokomo is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,583 at the 2010 census. Kokomo was founded in 1847 by George and Martha Stephenson. One of Kokomo's first businesses was a stagecoach stop on the current route of I-65 between Chicago and Indianapolis. The Stephenson family continued to run the business until it burned down in 1912. The town post office was established in 1851, and remained in operation until its closure in 1907. The Kokomo Manufacturing Company was started in 1898 by Wm. Burchard and others as a manufacturer of farm machinery and other items used on small farms around the United States. In 1904, John Pritzker bought the company from Burchard; he renamed it Pritzker Brothers Railroad Corporation. In 1917, Pritzker donated land for Kokomo High School which opened its doors that year. The school closed two years later due to financial difficulty; however, it reopened under new ownership and management in 1921 with an all-female staff. The school remains open today as Kokomo Community Schools Inc.. In 1984, the Kokomo metropolitan area had a population of over 100,000 people living within commuting distance of each other across six counties: Kosciusko County (the largest county), Hendricks County (second largest county), LaPorte County (thirdlargest county), Porter County (fourth largest county), and Scott County ( fifth largest). This large metropolitan area included parts of seven smaller counties: Lafayette Township (to the east of Kokomolee), Monmouth Township (northwest of Gowen City), OKra Township (southwest of Trenton Junction) , Owen Township (to the southwest of Vernon ), Putnam Township(to the northwestof Warsaw ), Warren township(tothe northeastof Corydon ). As more people moved into this growing area they began shopping centers were developed such as Southridge Shopping Center located just outside Kokomo limits along I-465 northbound near US 20/US 41/SR 614
Kokomo was founded in 1831 by George Stephenson and his brother, James Stephenson. The town was originally named "Cleveland", but the name was changed to Kokomo in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought in the Indian War. The first post office opened in Kokomo on July 1, 1833. In 1840, the first school was built in Kokomo. The town grew rapidly after Railroads were established in the area and new businesses were developed such as a sawmill and a flour mill. In 1907, Kokomo became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1969, it merged with neighboring Gary to form the current city of Gary.
