Kokomo, Indiana is a small town located in Kosciusko County, Indiana. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Kokomo was founded in 1853 by European Americans who came to the area from Illinois and Michigan. Kokomo is named after General Andrew Jackson's Creek settlement of Kokomo on the lower Ohio River. The first people to live in what is now Kokomo were American Indians who arrived from Illinois and Michigan in 1853. They built houses and hunted game near where they lived until 1855, when they left for good because of raids by Native American tribes. In 1865, a group of white men from Chicago started a flour mill in what is now Kokomo. The mill became one of the largest in the Midwest and produced flour for local markets until it closed in 1945. The mill left behind a large number of artifacts that have been preserved over time at the Museum of Art & Industry (MOAI). Kokomo has had several other businesses open since its founding including two sawmills, three hotels, and two banks. In 1906–07, Kokomo bought land downriver from Fort Wayne to build an airport which served as both a commercial center for local farmers and as an airfield for military activities during World War I. After the war ended, most civil activity stopped while development continued around the airport perimeter with little success until 1984 when Oklahoma City annexe
Kokomo was founded in 1814 by the Kokomo Band of Indians. It is the oldest continuously occupied Indian town in Indiana. The Hammonds, a white family, came to Kokomo in 1837 and became the town's first resident settlers. The community grew rapidly and an industrial area developed around the nearby water wheel. In 1852, Kokomo incorporated as a city.
