Kokomo is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the Kokomo River. The population was 393 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is the second most populous city in Porter County, after Terre Haute. It is also the most populous community in Porter County by population and the third most populous by acreage (after Terre Haute and Noblesville). The Kokomo area was first populated by Munda Indians, who were forced out of their homes during European exploration of what is now Indiana in 1812. They built a series of villages along the river from where they derived sustenance from fishing and hunting game. Kokomo began to be developed as an agricultural center around 1840 when white settlers began coming to live and work on land that had been donated to them by Chief Weekaheen of the Chippewa nation. White settlement increased as railroadroads were constructed through Porter County, making it easier for farmers to transport goods and services throughout the county. By 1860, over 80% of Kokomo's population had either arrived or been born here since its founding; this growth continued into the 20th century although some residents left due to changing economic conditions or competition from other settlements within Porter County. By 1930, there were only 12 people living in Kokomo; however, this number rapidly grew thanks to World War II when many local businesses became involved with production for military munitions plants across America including Kokomo itself which produced aluminum cans for General Motors Cars Incorporated (later GMC) at its plant on West Main Street between Harrison Road and Newburgh Avenue until 1970 when that facility closed down due to pollution concerns brought about by nearby Detroit automakers operations There has been a continually increasing demand for housing within town limits ever since; currently there are over 1,000 structures developments underway within town limits alone with plans for even more development set for later in history should market demand continuegrowth At present, much of what makes up downtown Kokoma - such as commercial districts near both First Baptist Church & Community Bank & State Liquor Store - remains undeveloped or underutilized while portions have seen rapid redevelopment which has led some observers to label downtown "the new Ku Klux Klan crossroads" It's no wonder then that so many students choose KOKOMO as their home away from home – not just because it’s an affordable place to study but also because you can get everything you need right here without leaving your comfortable surroundings!
