Kokomo, Indiana is a town in Hardin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is located on the southern edge of the county and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It is also home to Kokomo State University. The community was founded in 1867 as a small post office called "Canton." In 1881, it became "Kokomo," after its founder, Hiram Knight Kittredge. The name change came about because at that time there were no other towns within Hardin County with similar names. In 1892, Kokomo became an elected township and in 1912 it attained city status under Mayor James H. Welch. The first city council consisted of six members; four were citizens and two were appointed by the governor. On July 1, 1916, Kokomo became a full member of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). When that area was merged into the larger Indianapolis-Fort Wayne-Winchester MSA on January 1, 1997, Kokomi remained an enclave within that boundary until becoming an official city on September 17th of that year when all three municipalities met in one building for a main event celebrating rejoining the metropolitan area as one entity again! Kokomonians are known for their handmade quilts which are often displayed throughout their homes or businesses during special events or potluck suppers/feastsstuff like this past weekend’s “Bread basket stuffing” where we had 50 pounds of fresh dough made from scratch daily! All proceeds go to support local church programs through our church supported fundraiser!

Today, Kokomo is home to some of Indiana's most important businesses and cultural institutions, including the Kokomo Museum of Art and History, whichopened in 1984; the Indiana Folklife Center; andthe Kokomo Arena/Golf Course, which has been host to several professional sports teams over its history including the Indy Eleven (formerly known as United Indoor Soccer League),the Pacers (now called Pacers),the Hoosiers (now called Indiana State Police)and more recently,. The town also celebrates its namesake festival each year – which features art galleries, agricultural exhibitions and music concerts – with live entertainment throughout downtown.

The first recorded settler in Kokomo was John Prentice, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, Solomon Phelps and David Hockley erected the first sod house in Kokomo. By 1851, there were about 100 residents in Kokomo. The first store opened in Kokomo in 1856. The population of Kokomo peaked at 1,500 people during the early 1860s, but declined following the American Civil War and settlement of nearby cities. The town experienced a resurgence starting around the turn of the 21st century as it became an important manufacturing center for Midwest companies such as Ford Motor Company and Cummins Engine Company. However, recent economic conditions have led to increased poverty and declining population density in Kokomo.
