At first, they only had two homes – one up on Ridge Road and one down on Creek Road – but soon started planting corn, beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes and other vegetables in their garden while watching settlers move into their new communities nearby: Middletown (1849), Terre Haute (1850), Corydon (1851), Noblesville (1852) and Whitewater Junction/Westfield (1853). However, settler migration slowed after 1850 due to difficult water conditions caused by numerous creeks running through central Indiana; these included The Current which formed south of present-day Kokomo along State Road 624 about two miles east of town center; White Wing River which flowed west from Lake Koshkonkoma about four miles north of town center past present day Westfield;and Augustana River which ran southeast from Menasha about twelve miles northeast of present-day Kokomi before emptying into White Wing River just northwest of town center across from Augustana College now known as IUPUI . In 1857–58 George Stephenson built Kentucky’s first steam locomotive in anticipation that railroads would develop farther east so he could offer transportation services between Indianapolisville Junction and Terre Haute through Racine County; this led to increased traffic throughout centralIndiana causing many farmers to build larger settlements such as Kokomo where they could sell their produce directly to railroad passengers rather than going through local dealers or merchants where they had to pay inflated prices for goods brought overland from Illinois or other states

Kokomo, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the southern edge of Lake Michigan. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is one of two cities in Porter County and is home to the Kokomo Army Ammunition Plant and Kokomo Naval Weapons Station. It was also once a coal-fired power plant that closed in 1984. The first settlers in Kokomo were Germans who immigrated to Indiana from Königsberg, East Prussia, in 1837. They erected a log cabin on what is now State Road 5 near present day downtown Kokomo. In 1840 they built a gristmill on State Road 7 about three miles east of today's city limits. In 1847 David Sibley arrived from Ohio with his family and began cattle farming around what is now downtown Kokomo and along State Road 4 south to Grinnell Creek where he built a house on an old mill stream bed known as "Sibley's Mill". In 1850 he bought land from Washburn & Co., which included present day downtown Kokomo and some adjacent land including much of what is now Porter County. In 1852 Sibley founded the first post office in this area with mail service beginning May 12th, 1852; it was renamed Grinnell when it became part of Indianapolis (see history). He also established the first tannery west of the Mississippi River in this area; it operated until 1906 when it closed because of competition from other tanneries east of Chicago (seeTannery history). As early as 1858 Isaac Jenson had started raising chickens at what is now Old Exchange Plaza near Main Street corner (now Market Square) across from Post Office Square; these were later marketed under the name "Chickensville" (see Chikie history). By 1865 Jenson had patented his process for making chicken feed which led to his becoming one of America's leading poultry exporters (see Chikie history). It wasn't until 1903 that Harry Haggerty set up shop here as an independent grocer/canned food producer – one year earlier than any other American city! At that time there were only four grocery stores open coast-to-coast: Safeway, Kroger, Woolworths & Company and Peoples Grocery Company! As late as 1937 there were still just six grocery stores open nationwide! Haggerty eventually moved operations to Hammondsport after experiencing heavy competition from local grocers such as Kroger and Meijer throughout most of its long life! With world War II raging over Europe, demand for munitions skyrocketing during 1944–45 following advances by United States military scientists at nearby Purdue University's Research Laboratories #2), production initially slowed but continued nonetheless at Grinnell Army Ammunition Plant until 1945 when all plants wereshut down due to wartime restrictions on munitions production Kokomi industries reopened shortly after hostilities ended although output remain primarily civil engineering products such as asphalt pavement reinforcement etcetera rather than armaments manufacturing
