Kendallville is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,291 at the 2010 census. Kendallville is part of the Terre Haute–Vincennes Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1834 by James Kendall and his wife Elizabeth. It was named after the Kendall family's home near Lexington, Kentucky. The first post office opened in 1835. In 1844, the town became a village and had its own school district; it merged with the Terre Haute–Vincennes School District on April 2, 1966. The Kendallville ZIP Code is 62422. In 1880, John Sanger settled in what is now Kendallville and built a store andsmithy on State Road 9NR about one mile east of present-day Main Street which he called "Sanger's Store." He operated this business until his death in 1907. His son-in-law Daniel Hines bought Sanger's store from him and continued to operate it until 1918 when it burned down due to an electrical short circuit issue caused by a thunderstorm that night. Hines' wife Charity started operating the store until her death in 1951. She was succeeded by their daughter Loretta Hines who continued operations until she retired in 1990; she was succeeded by her son Jeffery Hines who still operates the business today as Jeffery Sanger & Son Incorporated (JSSI). In 1984 JSSI partnered with Knoppers Hardware Company to produce a line of hardware products called "Homespun" under license from Home Depot; these products were distributed through JSSI along with other affiliated stores across Butler County.[1] In recent years, Kendallville has seen increased development including several shopping malls which have attracted businesses such as Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears) and Macy’s Department Stores Company (Macy’s) since they opened nearby during the late 2000s onwards bringing jobs and economic stability to the community while also providing more access to education opportunities for residents[2].

The history of Kendallville begins with fur traders who traveled downriver to trade with Native American tribes along what is now known as the Ohio River basin. In 1836, these traders founded what would become Kendallville after they discovered land south of present-day Cincinnati on which to build their businesses. This initial settlement quickly grew due to its location at one of the few points where water could be transported easily for trading purposes and its close proximity to two important trade hubs - the Ohio River and the Indiana Canal - both within 50 miles of town. During this time period, Kendallville experienced significant growth thanks to its position as a dry goods business town and its importance as a hub for transportation between these key waterways and surrounding communities. By 1925, Kendallville had outgrown its smalltown status and became an incorporated city with a population of 27,000 people living in well- constructed homes across several blocks in downtowns such as Commerce Plaza or State Street. Kendallville was founded in 1814 by a group of men who were looking for a new home. The town was named after Caleb Kendall, an early settler. The first store in Kendallville opened in 1816. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 there were over twenty businesses in the town. In 1835, Kendallville became the county seat of Putnam County. In 1846, the United States bought much of what is now Indiana from France and set out to re-establish American control over the area. As part of this effort, President James K. Polk ordered that all Indian assets be seized and put into effect as part of the Treaty of Fort Wayne. This caused a very public uproar in Kendallville and many people quickly began to secede from the townspeople. By 1850, only about fifty people lived in Kendallville; most had left for other reasons or moved away when their homes were taken away.
