They camped near the present day intersection of State Road 2 and Washington Street until they built their own village on land that now includes much of what is Kendallville. A post office called Kendallville was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1892, Wm. Hennessey founded Hennessey Brothers Coal Company which became one of the largest coal companies in America. He also began production of cheese for later distribution by his company stores throughout central Indiana. In 1951, he donated land to the Kendallville School District which has continued to produce milk from his farm since then. The school district has also developed a number of parks including Fairgrounds Park and New Market Parkway Park as well as numerous other amenities such as arts and crafts studios and a library system that offers public access to books since 1997 when it opened under name "Kendallville Community Library". Today's economy relies heavily upon agriculture with many businesses focused around hayrides on newly grown cornfields or producing fruits and vegetables for local markets; these include several small grocery stores (Eve's), an agricultural equipment dealership (Boyd Equipment) as well as several larger farmers' markets selling both fresh produce and processed foods products from various suppliers across Indiana (Wine Country Markets/Fruitland Farms/Napa Valley Markets). It is located on the Wabash River between Terre Haute and Lafayette. The first Europeans to visit Kendallville were Frenchmen in 1787. The area that now includes Kendallville was part of what was then called La Salle Township. In 1812, General David Wilkinson founded Fort Dearborn here after invading Michigan Territory. He named it for his friend and mentor, James Dearborn of Detroit. In 1813, Wilkinson's force destroyed a village near present-day Terre Haute while moving supplies across the Wabash River to Fort Dearborn. A plaque marking the event is located on Old Main Street in town today. The fort served as a base of operations for Indian Wars fought by General Andrew Jackson against Native American forces from Illinois and other states east of the Mississippi River. In 1815, Congress passed an act authorizingthe erection of a national capital at Washington City in Missouri; but this structure never materialized because President James K. Polk chose Indianapolis as the new national capital instead In 1821, Kendallville became one of twelve townships created from parts of Monroe County when that county was split into two due to sectional fighting over land patents issue during the Mexican–American War On November 3, 1830, railroad construction began through central Indiana with trains running between Chicago and St Louis passing through Kendallville along what is now I-465 On October 15th 1840 local pioneer Elisha Goode ceded sections 4 and 5 (now Kane County) in what are currently eastern Posey Township (northwest Harrison Township), east Knox Township (southeast Knox Township), northcentral Posey Township (southwest Harrison Township), northwest Middleton Township (northwest Posey Township), southeast Knox township (southwest Middleton Township) name change approved by popular vote on December 2nd 1840 . These changes followed hard upon adjacent Indian settlements which had also experienced population growth since early 1840s with many families coming to work on new railroads building canalboats or crossing water roads from their villages
