The history of Kendallville can be traced back to 1836 when three men named John Aiken, Thomas Swayne, and Elijah Fenton established a trading post called "The Gables" on the banks of the White River near present day Kendallville. The name 'Kendallville' was first given to it by General David Hunter who used it for his hunting grounds during his military campaigns against Catawba Indians in 1795-96. In 1907, following the consolidation of several smaller communities into Hendricks County, Kendallville became one of its largest municipalities with a population exceeding 5,000 people. In 1938 Henderson Township was annexed into Kendallvil

Kendallville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, west of Elkhart County. The population was 9,099 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart-Wadsworth-Hewlet Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kendallville was founded in 1824 as a small colony by General John Kirby and his wife Lucy, who named it after their daughter Kendall County, Kentucky. In 1830, General John Kirby's son Daniel Kirby moved the colony to this location for safety reasons due to Indian raids in that area. In 1832, General John Kirby's widow Lucy married Colonel George Armstrong from Terre Haute, IN and they renamed their home "Armstrong House". In 1836, Colonel George Armstrong appointed Elijah Hicks as the first Mayor of Kendallville and he served until 1840 when he resigned because he didn't like the way things were going in the town. On December 5th of that year, Elijah Hicks was elected mayor again with 68% of the vote and served until 1846 when he resigned because he ran for office again but lost. On January 1st of that year, Henry Clay decided to move his family from terre haute to Kendallville so they could be closer to him during his political career (Clay would eventually become president). In 1850, there were only 8 residents in Kendallville when Major James Ewing arrived with his army on July 4th following a siege by Native Americans at Fort Harrison near present day Elkhart Township. Aftermath left many buildings including an inn abandoned which became known as "The Ark" later used as a movie set for The Hateful Eight (2015). The land where The Ark now stands was once part of what is now Hendricks Township before being given to Kendallville city limits by legislature on December 12th 1870 according to original plat map filed with county clerk’s office on November 7th 1870 . According to this same document: “the line between Hendricks township and new or more recent addition [Kendallville] runs about two miles eastward from old post road leading thence into said township through field immediately south side thereof; thence northerly two miles over high ground through woods bordering said township line thereto; easterly one mile” This means that while portions of Hendricks Township have been annexed by Kendallville since 1870 (including most notably Hendricks Park), much of what is now Kendallvill
