Jeffersonville is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Jeffersonville was James Witherspoon and his family who arrived in 1812. In 1827, John Sargent and his brother-in-law built the first log cabin in what is now known as Sargent Park. By 1830, more settlers had arrived and a post office was established under the name of Washington Mills. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1830 there were ten families living in Jeffersonville. In 1836, David Hackett organized a Methodist church here which became one of the largest churches in Butler County. In 1840, Hugh Armstrong moved to Jeffersonville from Crawfordsburg with his family and began operating a gristmill on Main Street which later became known as Hackett's Mill House. By 1850, all but two of the original ten families had left for other parts of Butler County because of various economic problems within the community such as lack of water or transportation access to markets outside of Butler County during that period. However, by 1860 most of those who had left had come back to live in Jeffersonville again due to new opportunities available here due to development around town caused by railroad expansion into central Indiana during that time period. In 1872, Jno Haggerty founded Haggerty's grocery store on First Street which became one of downtown Jeffersontown's main commercial attractions until it closed its doors for good in 1978 following prohibition efforts throughout much of central Indiana during that time period including Jeffersontown itself! During this time period also (1872-1978), many social organizations were formed such as local Odd Fellows Lodge #4 (now called Fountain Square Lodge #5) which met at Haggerty’s Grocery Store; Baptist Church No 1 (now known as Christmastime Christian Center); Masonic Lodge #2 - nowknown as Keystone Masonic Temple; Presbyterian Church No 1 - now known as First United Methodist Church; American Legion Post 9 - now known as Veterans Memorial Hall; Tea Party Patriots Post 8 - now known as Patriot Place Mall; among others!
