Jeffersonville is a small town in southwest Indiana, United States. The population was 5,732 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of Terre Haute. The early residents of Jeffersonville were farmers and their families. A post office was established in 1848, and by 1860, there were about 100 people living in the town. A mill was built in 1865 and soon became a important economic factor in the community. By 1870, there were about 150 people living in Jeffersonville. Jeffersonville experienced growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Mississippi River and its connections to both Chicago and St Louis. During this time, workers from these cities brought new technologies to Jeffersonville such as electric lights and refrigeration systems. -In 1907, a company named National Electric Railway Company (NER) began passenger service between Terre Haute and Jeffersonville using steam locomotives hauled by horses or carts.. Passenger service ended in 1933 but freight services continued until 1978.. In 1911, JH Manufacturing Co., Inc., a manufacturer of firearms began production of pistols for use by law enforcement officers.. This company would later become America's most successful handgun manufacturer with products sold worldwide including handguns for military forces including the U.S armed forces and police departments around the world

Jeffersonville is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jeffersonville was founded in 1805 by John Randolph and his brothers-in-law, David Dixon and Jonathan Edwards. The original home of the Randolph family still stands today on Main Street. Jeffersonville was originally named for George Washington because he had been born there in 1743. In 1824, Jeffersonville became the seat of Gibson County after it was created from parts of Posey and Kosciusko counties. In 1860, when the American Civil War ended, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Jeffersonville to inspect Confederate forces loyal to him before their march into southern Indiana to join General Robert E. Lee’s army). Afterward, many Jeffersontown residents voted to secede from Indiana and become part of Confederate Missouri until they were restored by Ulysses S. Grant as part of his New Deal program following World War II.. On July 4th, 1907 a fire destroyed most of downtown Jeffersontown which had been built around what is now First National Bank Square with its three blocks long main street running perpendicular to Second Avenue (now US 31). This caused such an uproar that local authorities decided to rename all streets leading out of town after members of Congress or other prominent Americans who had died in office during that year or earlier: Main Street ( afterward renamed US 36), Court Street (later renamed US 31), Constitution Avenue (became I-64), State Avenue (became I-65) etc., although some streets retain their original names without any change: Market Street ( later renamed US 231), Liberty Road (later renamed I-465), Third Street (later renamed I-465) etc.).
Jeffersonville was founded in 1828 by Josiah Quincy and his wife, Lucy. The Quincys were the first white settlers in Jeffersonville. In 1830, they organized a school and named it the Quincy School. They also built a home which is still standing today. The Quincys remained in Jeffersonville for many years and played an important role in its growth. In 1851, they became the first family to own land east of the Mississippi River. They also donated land to the town for a public square. In 1865, they sold their property to the town for $4,000.
