Jeffersonville is a small town in central Indiana, about 25 miles north of the state capital, Indianapolis. It was founded in 1817 by George Washington and his family as a small village named for Jefferson County, Virginia. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming an important industrial center and hosting two universities before it became known for its agricultural products. In the 1960s and 1970s, Jeffersonville experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for suburban Indianapolis. However, efforts to revitalize the town have been successful and it remains one of the most vibrant communities in central Indiana today. George Washington first settled in what is now Jeffersonville in 1817 when he moved from Richmond, Virginia with his family. He intended to establish himself as a farmer but soon realized that lack of land was his only obstacle to success. Washington worked tirelessly to purchase land near what is now downtown Jeffersontown and built his home there in 1819-20. By 1830, he had developed enough of the area to become known as "The Valley" and began soliciting donations from local farmers for construction of a schoolhouse, barns, and other infrastructure needed to support his new community. In 1833-34, he also constructed the first courthouse in Indiana which served as both judicial center and business center for the surrounding region. The courthouse still stands today and is used as part of Jeffersontown's history museum. Jeffersonville quickly became an important commercial center due to its location close to major roadsand railroads. By 1840-41, businesses had grown so large that they were able to build their own churches–one of which still stands today (the First Baptist Church). This period also saw dramatic growth within the municipality; by 1850-51, population totals had reached over 1,500 people! The townsite continued burgeoning throughout this era with even more businesses opening up until 1861 when Union troops destroyed most of downtown Jeffersontown during their siege of Indianapolis following Confederate victories at Fort Donelson and Shiloh respectively. This event left many residents homeless or stranded on city streets while they awaited relief supplies arriving via carriages or wagons full of horse participants scheduled back at base camp nearby! Although much damage was done during this attack (most notably brick buildings collapsed), it did provide some impetus for developers within town to begin rebuilding downtown again once hostilities ended six years later! During Reconstruction Period after Civil War Ended (1865-1871), development opportunities increased once again because new federal laws allowed states greater flexibility when it cameto governing Local governments affairs & thus more opportunityfor private enterprise tobuildup Community facilities outside State lines…. Jeffersonville was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson. The town was named after Thomas Jefferson, who had been president of the United States at the time of its founding. The first settler in Jeffersonville was George Willoughby. The town grew rapidly, and by 1829 it had a population of 1,000 residents. By 1830, however, the growth of the town had stalled, and it only reached a population of 500 by 1840. In 1851, Jeffersonville became a city when it amalgamated with nearby Fort Wayne.
