The name Jeffersonville comes from John Quincy Adams, who served as president from 1828 to 1830 and was based in nearby Vandalia. Jeffersonville developed around two churches, First Baptist and Second Baptist, which were built in 1802 and 1806 respectively. Jeffersonville is a small town in Brown County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brown County. The village of Jeffersonville was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Elizabeth Keyes Wilkinson. The first store opened in 1815. In 1818, the Wilkinson family donated an acre (0.40 hectares) of land to the Village Trustees for use as a public square and schoolhouse. A post office was established at Jeffersonville on July 24, 1819, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1924. The first courthouse in Jeffersonville was built in 1825 by Elijah Howe. A new courthouse replaced the old building between 1830-1834. The old courthouse burned down on November 12, 1840; however, due to its importance as a local landmark, it has been preserved as part of the history of Jeffersonville since that time. In 1860, Isaac Hodges formed a wagon manufacturing company near what is now North Main Street and First Avenue in downtown Jeffersonville with his brother John Hodges Sr., father-in-law Ira Bogan and other business partners known as "The Four Horsemen." By 1861 they had become one of America's largest wagon manufacturers with products including wagons for trade and transportation plus carriage goods and saddles for horse coaches. Hodges is also credited with having invented the self-propelled cart or caravan called a vehicle de porte rouge which played an important role during the American Civil War era.. In 1865 he sold his interest to David Hackett who continued manufacturing wagons until 1889 when all production ceased due to economic reasons including high competition from foreign companies.. Hackett's son David Hackett took over operations until World War II when they were merged into theIndiana National Fair Corporation.. The town of Jeffersonville was founded in 1815 by Captain James Speed and his family. The first settler in the area was John Denton, who arrived in 1816. The town grew rapidly after it was granted a post office in 1824. By 1830, the population had grown to over 100 residents. The town experienced some growth spurts during the 1830s and 1840s, but overall it remained relatively small until the mid-19th century when its population exploded due to agricultural development around the community. In 1848, Indiana statehood was granted to Jeffersonville and other nearby towns. This led to a dramatic increase in businesses and population within the town as people began looking for a location that would be part of Indiana. In 1860, Jeffersonville became one of five towns consolidated into Oneida County under President Andrew Johnson's New Deal program. This gave the town more resources and allowed it to grow even faster than before. During World War II, Jeffersonville played an important role as an airfield for the United States military effort against Nazi Germany. The airfield housed two radar towers which provided coverage for much of central Europe during World War II. Additionally, many homes were built at the airport during this time which helped support increased traffic and economic activity there during wartime
