In 1865, Jeffersonville was founded by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town grew quickly, and in 1876 it became the county seat of Posey County. By 1912, the population had grown to about 60,000. Growth in Jeffersonville led to a need for new housing, and the first subdivisions were developed in the early 1920s. During World War II, Jeffersonville played an important role as one of three U.S. military bases in Indiana (the others being Fort Wayne and Evansville). The town was also home to the largest munitions manufacturing plant in America at that time. In 1951, Jeffersonville became a city with a population of over 100,000 people. Today, Jeffersonville is an important center for business and industry; its economy has been buoyed by its location close to major highways and airports. The city is known for its cultural attractions - such as its Shakespearean theater and art galleries - as well as its variety of restaurants and nightlife options

Jeffersonville is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hendricks County were French fur traders and travelers who passed through during the 17th century. In 1814, when the Territory of Indiana was organized, Jeffersonville became one of its initial towns. The town's post office operated from 1816 to 1868. Jeffersonville was named after General James Jeffersons Brigade which fought in the American Revolutionary War and later served as Governor of Kentucky under President George Washington. A small community on the east side of the river developed around this time and it became known as "Jeffersonville proper". By 1830, most of what is now Jeffersonville had been built and by 1840, all but a small portion of it had been incorporated into the larger town. In 1848, when a new courthouse was built in Terre Haute, Jeffersonville chose to remain separate from that city and began to be called "Terre Haute" or simply "Jeffersonville". This distinction persisted until about 1900 when Terre Haute began to annex more and more portions of rural Hendricks County. In 1907-08, an attempt was made by then-Mayor John Jolliffe to rename Jeffersonville for Ulysses S Grant but this effort failed because no votes were cast in support of such a proposal at an election held that year. However, Ulysses S Grant did receive honorary citizenship from Jeffersonville in 1908 before he died several years later at age 81 years old (he would have surpassed 100 years old had he lived). John Fenton opened a grocery store on Main Street in 1850 which soon became one of the largest stores in town with a staff totaling 30 people; however Fenton's store closed its doors around 1870 due largely to competition from nearby stores owned by Elijah Hodge Sr., John Fenton Jr., Samuel Morse Sr., Wm Twining and others]. Other early businesses include: AgrarianJacket Millinery shop started by Mrs Ballard; Oneida Shoestore started by Mrs Maynard; Mr Grimes' Livery stable started by Prentice Grimes;Mr Hodge’s millinery shop started by Elijah Hodge Sr.; Dr White’s Druggist Store started about 1860 (); Two Brothers Coffee House started about 1860 (). As business grew throughout Harrison Township outside Terre Haute increasing numbers German immigrants also moved into what is now Hendricks County for work purposes during those days many coming directly from Ansbach am Rhein area near Cologne Germany ( northeastern Germany ). These people brought their own food supplies along with them so there were few stores open upon arrival especially given that there were not yet any railroad connections between these areas let alone transportation available for goods shipment thus limiting if nototally causing some merchants difficultiesablishing themselves permanently within their new communities . Consequently much smaller amounts or no retailers existed within villages or hamlets until times changed following World War II making it easier for residents & businesses within those newly formed communities connect thruroads/roadsides

Jeffersonville is a small town in Indiana, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and his family in 1785. He named it for himself and his wife Martha Jefferson, daughter of Thomas Jefferson. The first post office opened in 1807. In 1814, the first school building was built. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a mill which operated until 1827 when a store and hotel were built on Main Street. Jeffersonville became an incorporated village in 1903 and has since grown to include over 10K residents within its boundaries. The economy of the community depends largely upon agriculture, with some manufacturing also taking place such as corn products, flour, cheese production, and hardware stores (among others). One of Jeffersontown's most popular attractions is its annual Harvest Festival which takes place on the second Saturday in October each year throughout the entire village including downtown areas adjacent to both State High School Stadium (home field for local high school teams) and Community Park (site of cultural events). This event features Agricultural exhibits from various hometown businesses as well as music by local artists throughout the daylong festivities including pie tastings from various restaurants during lunchtime!
