Jeffersonville is a small town in central Indiana, United States. It was founded by John Jay in 1824 and named for then-President Jefferson. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The early history of Jeffersonville is intertwined with the story of its namesake. John Jay came to Indiana as an American Revolutionary War soldier and landowner in 1785. He played a significant role in the signing of the Treaty of Paris that ended the war. In 1824, Jay moved his family to this area and started a small farmstead on what is now State Street. He built a three-story home on what is now Main Street and named it after himself – Jeffersonville had been renamed from Sullivan County duringJay's presidency (1819-25). The community grew quickly, thanks to Jay's farming skills and his influence within local society. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Jeffersonville – many of them farmers who cultivated crops such as corn, wheat, beans, potatoes, and cotton. The town boasted two churches – one dedicated to St Paul’s Episcopal Church (founded in 1831), which served as the town’s main center of worship; and another affiliated with Methodism which opened its doors in 1837. In addition to its religious affiliation, Jeffersonville also became known for its prominent shopping district that included several stores including one run by Nicholas Grothendieck that sold groceries such as meat and poultry products from horse-drawn wagons along State Street between Fourth Avenue and Seventh Avenue. During the late 19th century, various industrial plants were established near or inside of Jeffersonville – responsible for creating much noise and pollution across the townscape over time! However, despite these drawbacks, overall life continued relatively normal until World War II when large numbers of people relocated to nearby cities due to economic opportunity or wartime shortages during the war itself. This changeover eventually led to increased crime rates within Jeffvillians themselves as newly arrived immigrants replaced those who had left for more secure positions elsewhere during peacetime times…but most importantly during World War II when many young people lost their jobs because production activities shifted inland due to National Defense requirements (steel mills being among those factories). This event helped lead directly to mass migration back into Areas I & II after 1945 when hard labor opportunities became available again outside city limits following prohibition enforcement efforts
Jeffersonville was founded in 1814 by James K. Polk and John Quincy Adams, two of the sons of U.S. President James K. Polk. The town is named for Jefferson, a British general who fought in the American Revolution and served as Secretary of State under George Washington. In 1828, the town was renamed for Andrew Jackson, who had been president when it was founded.
