Jeffersonville was founded in 1785 by James Jefferson and is the oldest town in Indiana. The town was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. By 1830, the population of Jeffersonville had grown to over 1,000 people and it began to grow rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the White River and its access to trade with Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1836, the town became a part of Kokomo Township. By 1850, however, there were only about 350 residents living in Jeffersonville; it had become a small agricultural center that relied heavily on agriculture for its income. By 1870, however, there were more than 3200 residents living in Jeffersonville and it had become an important commercial center with several stores, churches, schools and a hospital. When Kokomo Township was merged into Hamilton Township in 1874, Jeffersonville became an independent municipality once again under local control. In 1933, however, when Hamilton Township was dissolved into Harrison County due to population growth within that county (due largely to immigration from Mexico), Jeffersonville came under state control as part of what is now Hendricks County. In 1956-57 local government reform eliminated township governments throughout Indiana; therefore all municipalities except those within Harrison County are now unicameral with two branches - one made up of elected officials and one made up of appointed officials who serve staggered four-year terms which ended December 31st each year regardless of whether or not they are reelected/removed from office (the process is known as "firing" an elected official). During this time period also numerous improvements were made to the downtown area including widening High Street from three lanes down to four lanes wide so that more traffic could flow through without stopping for pedestrians or bicyclists oncoming from opposite directions; construction of new parks such as Wellesley Park (established in 1907); addition of streetlights; creation of public works departments such as Streets & Roads which took over many responsibilities previously held by private companies such as paving streets etc.; establishment of zoning regulations governingresidential development; erection of new buildings including hospitals etc.; introductionof electric lighting
Jeffersonville was founded in 1814 by the family of Isaac Jefferson. The town was named after George Washington and James K. Polk, two of the forty-six United States Presidents who were born in Indiana. When the American Civil War began, Jeffersonville sided with the Union, but by 1865 it had become a Confederate stronghold. After the war, most of the Jeffersons left for Illinois, but some continued to live in Jeffersonville until 1949.
