The area that makes up today's Jeffersonville was first populated by Shawnee Indians and other Native Americans from what is now Illinois. By 1795, English colonists had arrived in what are now Indiana and also began settling here. In 1821, these English settlers founded what would become Jeffersonville on the banks of the White River. Over time, this community grew with new arrivals from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Italy and elsewhere. The original town core included a courthouse where courts were held for small villages like Jeffersonvilie until 1865 when they moved to larger facilities at later times including downtown (now known as Court House Square) and East Market Street). In 1853, after being purchased by General John Custer during his final cavalry engagement against Kit Carson's force at Little Bighorn Creek Station near present day Westfield mall in Indianapolis,, Jeffcovillians voted to annex their neighbouring city of Fishers which then had a population of around 100 people only! This annexation paved the way for decades of growth for both cities with Jeffcovillians becoming some of Hoosier nation’s most affluent citizens along with sister city relationships forming between both towns throughout much Ofcetime! It wasn't until 1969 that Federal troops occupied an adjacent parcel adjacent to current day North Park Avenue/Greening Road making it their new home following Stanley Johnson's purchase (of part ownership) from General Richard Hayslip who had been occupying it since 1862! Following Johnson's purchase came rapid development including land reclamation which saw buildings such as First National Bank relocated from downtown into newly developed areas such as South Park Avenue/Greening Road while many businesses closed or merged over time due to competition from more contemporary locations! During this time, Jeff City also experienced significant growth due to efforts by Mayor Jeffords to make it an attractive place for businesses and residents alike to live and work; he even developed plans for Expeditions Park which would have included a large amusement park adjacent to downtown; however these plans never materialized becauseof political activism led by then Mayor John Fritchie (who later served as Governor).
