Jeffersonville is a small town in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–South Bend metropolitan area. The history of Jeffersonville began with the founding of the town by General James Wilkinson in 1814. In 1823, a post office was established in the town and it remained an important community until about 1930. The first settler in Jeffersonville was John Wilkinson, who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named his settlement after George Washington as a tribute to American independence and democracy. By 1830, many other settlers had arrived in Jeffersonville and it became an important center for trade and commerce within central Morgan County. One early resident, Elijah Bogan, helped found neighboring village of Howard on the banks of the Clear Fork of the White River. In 1834, General James Wilkinson moved his family to Jeffersonville from Indianapolis because he felt that Indianapolis was becoming too crowded with people who were not content with their lot in life. He founded what would become known as "The Old Northwest" neighborhood which consisted of properties near present-day Main Street and Depot Square (now known asMayfair Square). This racially diverse community enjoyed great success during its early years due to its openmindedness and entrepreneurial spirit; many new businesses were founded here including one called The Arsenal which manufactured firearms for local militias during the Civil War. During this time period there were also significant changes taking place within Indiana's economy; following railroads' construction throughout much of eastern Ohio valley region (this included Jeffersontown), farming practices changed from individual plots to large fields where crops could be grown more easily using irrigation systems brought over from Illinois or Missouri Valley regions . Manufacturing advancements led to increased demand for goods produced here such as textiles, shoes, radios etc.; making Jeffersontown one of several major textile centers across America during this time period . After heavy defeats at Fort Donelson (1865) and Vicksburg (1868), General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union forces withdrawn from east Tennessee by May 1865; this led to an overall decrease in agricultural production statewide resulting in decreased market prices for produce exported into eastern Ohio Valley region . Withdrawal also created opportunities for entrepreneurs like Eben Clark who opened up various businesses around town including a grocery store/cafeteria/ bakery complex on South Market Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue; later renamed First Baptist Church – West End Chapel - later still First Baptist Church –Jeffersonvillette ; then finally closing down his business due to competition from larger stores opening up throughout central Morgan County during this time period However these ventures did not last long due toClark's lack of experience with running a small business outsideof Purdue University where he attended school prior to starting his enterprises . Consequently most Hoosiers today know very little about earlier pioneering times when Jeffersontown played an integral role within both Central Indiana Communities
Jeffersonville was founded in 1827 by Colonel James K. Polk and his wife, Rachel. The town was named for Jefferson County, Kentucky, where thePolks lived at the time. The town’s first post office was established in 1829. It moved to its present location in 1837. In 1830, Jeffersonville became the county seat of Knox County. In 1836, the county Seat Act eliminated Knox County and made Jeffersonville the new county seat of Clark County. The original courthouse in Jeffersonville burned down in 1840, but a new courthouse was built and dedicated in 1847. The first courthouse square is located on North Main Street today.
