Jeffersonville is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun in Jeffersonville was a muzzleloader made by Nicholas Flournoy in 1824. A crossbow had been used before but it did not work well so Nicholas designed and built this new type of gun which fired arrows instead of bolts. This gun was called the "Flaming Sword". It was used by frontier farmers to hunt game and it became very popular because it could shoot arrows as fast as a man could fire them with his bow and arrow. Jeffersonville is a small town in eastern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the White River and is located within the Miami County seat of Jefferson. The town was founded by General George Rogers Clark in 1814. In 1830, it became part of Miami County. In 1903, it became one of the original towns in what would become Johnson County. The town was annexed to Miami County in 1907 and then to Johnson County in 1912. Jeffersonville had a post office from 1814 until 1827; its first postmaster was Johnathon Gist. On November 30, 1850, a road connecting Jeffersonville with Vincennes opened and served as an important link for settlers coming into this area after the American Civil War. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army through central Indiana to cross the White River near Vincennes and attack Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Fort Donelson. After days of fighting, Grant ordered his troops to withdraw upstream towards Knox City while Ewell continued his march eastward towards Jeffersonville through rural areas near Warsaw Junction on Monday morning February 7th 1862 (the date that famous photograph shows Confederate General Robert Ewell's advance guard marching through Warsaw Junction). A few hours later Union troops discovered Confederate skirmishers behind some trees just outside of town limits - this event is known as "The Battle of Warsaw Junction". Aftermath: Colonel James Hance's 9th Indiana Cavalry Regiment lost 5 troopers killed (2 officers and 3 enlisted men) and 20 wounded including captain Samuel Dickson who died from wounds received that day; total number of casualties for both armies were about 150 dead or missing (not including Confederates), plus 600 or so captured cavalrymen). The first settler in Jeffersonville was John Covington, who arrived in 1785. He and his wife Sarah founded the village of Covington on the east bank of the White River. Jeffersonville grew quickly due to its location near Logansport and its access to water resources. By 1815, it had a population of over 100 residents. In 1816, Jeffersonville became the county seat of Posey County and was incorporated as a town. In 1827, it became part of Evansville County when that county was organized. The post office at Jefferontown served as the county seat until 1903. During World War I, Jeffersonville played an important role in support of American effort by providing munitions and food for military forces stationed in Europe. After World War II ended, the economy slowed down due to decreased demand for goods exported from America and overall economic recession throughout much of Western Europe during that time period; however, Jefferville has experienced recent growth with many businesses opening up shop here since 2000 including several medical clinics and factories which have created new jobs for locals as well as contributing to local coffers through taxes paid by those businesses
