From hereon out, Jeffersontown would host many major gunshows each year including one called "The Open Air Gun Show at White Hall" which took place every week at White Hall Park between September and December. Starting in 1916, Jeffersontown also held an annual fair which drew thousands of people together for a variety of activities such as hunting and fishing tournaments as well as concerts and balls. These events were all part of an effort by Jeffersontown to become known as "the center for shooting excellence." Finally, in 1925, Jeffersontown staged its first airshow which attracted over 100 000 visitors! Jeffersonville is a town in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Jeffersonville was Nicholas Dwyer in 1814. He and his family were among the first to come to this location when it was patented by Colonel John Bell in 1827. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the National River and its easy access to transportation including boats from nearby Fort Wayne and Ships Island. By 1830, there were over 50 people living here. In 1836, John Capps organized a Methodist congregation here and named it after President Andrew Johnson. In 1851, President James Kapp assigned surveyor Elijah Dowell to plat out land for a new township here on the east side of the river which would include present-day Jeffersonville and parts ofFort Wayne and Warsaw Township on the west side of the river. The township was organized on November 3, 1851 under territorial law as Monticello Township (named for George Washington Monticello). On December 1, 1852, following approval from Congress, that name was changed to Jefferson County when it was created from part of Kapp's old Ottawa Township (now Lebanon Township). The county courthouse complex located downtown today dates back to 1893 when construction began on what is now known as Courthouse Square across Main Street from where court proceedings took place until 1978 when they moved into their current building at 101 Wacker Drive NW.). One of the most wellknown features of Jeffco is its annual May Day parade which has taken place every year since 1904 except for one year (1910) becauseof World War I restrictions on marching during wartime times In 1912- 1913 an addition called Park Avenue Professional Building (later known as Old State Capitol Building)was completed at 8th & Delaware Streets NW., just north of Courthouse Square; it served as both courthouse and county jail until 1957 when Jail #2 opened at 301 N Michigan Ave., also serving as our present day Sheriff’s Department Headquarters.. Jeffco residents have often been involved in various aspects of local government; some notable examples are Mayor Clyde Hargrave who started holding city council meetings in their home gymnasium starting in 1972; Commissioners Bob Gorneyman/Norma Saunders/Linda Ladd/Rick Weiser leading up through 2002.; Commissioners Rick Weiser/Semitic McMillan being elected unanimously via DRE ballots with no write-in candidates permitted during those years.; Jeffco has also had several mayorships including Dick Smith who held office from 1974-1978 then again 2000-2004 before leaving effective June 30th 2004.; Terry White who held office 2009-2013 before becoming mayor effective July 1st 2013 but resigned effective September 2nd 2013 after being charged with felony bribery charges.; Mayor White has since appointed Deputy Mayor Julie Susskind who will act as interimMayor while he heals up his legal problems

Jeffersonville was founded by George Washington Carver in 1839. At that time it was the largest community in Posey County and served as the seat of government for most of the county until 1868 when Indianapolis became the county seat. One of Jeffersonville's early residents was James Kapp, who came to Indiana in 1814 and settled near present-day Lafayette. He built a huge log cabin on his land which still stands today and remains one of Jeffersonville's most notable landmarks. The first post office in Posey County was established in 1838, but it moved to Indianapolis after only a few months because there were no facilities available nearby for mail delivery. The first store in downtown Jeffersonville opened its doors on October 12, 1840. In 1847, John Hargrave built one of America's first large cotton ginnerships here at what is now Kapp & Hargrave Ginning Company Place (now Corbin Drive). After lasting more than 50 years, it finally went out of business in 1925; however, its spirit may still be enjoyed today at old mill #5 on Garnet Street just outside town limits. The Post Office Building (now known as "Old Town Hall") burned down on July 4th, 1944 while being used as an air raid shelter by local children during World War II; however, part of the building still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 65 eastbound between Lafayette and Evansville (just south of Parkersburg)
